Boy the op took a beating on this one lol, I don’t see the need for a heated shift knob and I don’t hang onto the knob either but I do drive with just my left hand always have for 31 years ??‍♂
And rightfully so. This reminds me of a thread where the poster was complaining about how the doors didn't automatically unlock when they got close to the Jeep. That they had to actually touch the Jeep unlike their Cadillac. My response was while they were worried about that someone in the heart of the Congo was worried about their door not locking and being raped by a roving band of rebels.
I'm dumbfounded by some of the bitching that goes on here. We are such an entitled nation.

While I can take a good ribbing (and honestly expected it for this one with this crowd), I want to be clear that I'm not bitching about anything, nor am I asking Jeep to put this in from the factory.

That's why I deliberately posted in the Interior MODS subforum. I fully expect to need to mod this myself, if it's something I wanted to pursue. People mod all sorts of stupid shit on their Jeeps.

My wife had an acquaintance in high school that was in the habit of hanging his arm, pointing down, out the driver's window. One day he was side-swiped. Let's just say that his nickname is not "Lefty". Ouch.

Years ago, I owned and showed MGBs. It was well-known within that owner community to avoid resting one's hand on the shift lever when driving, something very easy to do in the model's cozy interior.

The abbreviated height of the B's shift lever meant that resting one's hand on the shift knob created downward pressure that, over time, was confirmed to cause accelerated wear on the shift fork(s) in the gearbox. This was authenticated by relevant photos of disassembled transmissions. Damaged shift forks can affect the operation of the synchronizers, which will in turn affect shift quality. A cascade effect.

So, there it is.

The foregoing is a data point of one, but it's also well-proven. How or even if this matter crosswalks to the Aisin in the current-gen. Wrangler isn't anything I personally care about (my JLU has the 850RE); I'm just passing on my related experience.

If any of the OEMs actually warn against it in their Owner's Manuals, that should add a bit of necessary context here.
I know the idea of not keeping your hand on the shifter is well know. I just think it's something that you couldn't do in the 60's and maybe manuals have improved a tiny bit. I don't know a single manual driver that's ever had a problem from resting their hand on a shifter. Did MGs have good transmissions?

I must admit that I laughed at a friend once, who was complaining that her Audi was at the shop for a recall in the middle of winter and the dealership loaned her a car without the heated steering option. My reaction was to moke her saying that I had that and they were called gloves.

Man you can’t understand until you experience it. It was part of the cold climate package on my Jeep and darn is it nice to actually hold the steering wheel to warm your hands. If jeep got one thing right, it is that option. It gets so hot that it has to be turned off at some point, on mine anyway.

With this said, I do drive with one hand and my right elbow is resting on the center console with my hand hanging. When my right hand gets cold, I just do like I should and drive with both hands.

I understand your suggestion, but these moving parts with power would just be calling for failure. Heck, Jeep has a hard time making things that are immobile work correctly. Imagine if it moves? especially move as much as a manual transmission shifter?‍? but then again, the steering moves quite a bit too?‍♂

For some odd reason I rest my right hand on the shifter knob too.. I would love that knob to have the same warm and toasty heating that the steering has. Great quality of life feature :D

I have seen the transfer case knobs get replaced with aftermarket ones (has screen for shock settings), there could be a product that does the same with a small heating element?

Man if this isn't the truth. This sub kills me.

You get some people who are like, "Hell yeah, give me an $80K 392 with all the bells and whistles" and then a whole other crowd who's like "WTF do these things cost so much? Strip it down to a metal feeding trough attached to two axles and 45-inch tires and I'm in heaven!"

Awww.., thats cute, somebody from Texas complaining about the cold.
The temps here dropped from 80f to -18 in exactly two weeks.
Yeah, it got a tad chilly here recently too. I specifically ordered a MT but I've managed to survive so far. It was -13 on my way home last night (and it's gonna get a lot colder in the coming months) but it sure was beautiful.

Yes I realize this is a first-world problem and that I'm likely to attract all of the "electronics are bad" Jeepers, but hear me out.

Like I imagine most of you, I typically drive with one hand on the wheel, and the other resting on my shifter, even in an automatic. While the steering wheel is heated, the shifter knob is not, so my right hand is typically freezing in the winter, while my left hand is spoiled with the heated steering wheel.

Has anyone tried to add a heating element to the automatic shifter knob? It could be wired up to the heated steering wheel button, so no new switch is needed, but it would be nice if both hands could be warm.
I drive a manual and therefore not supposed to keep my hand on the shifter, you can potentially pull (even ever so slightly) away from the gear mesh.

Also like, gloves.
I've had a lot of cars with solid steel weighted knobs that are hot as fuck in the summer and cold as fuck in the winter.
So just gloves. All season driving gloves.
