Hard top wind noise

So this past Thursday I find myself in Maryland taking delivery on my Jlu sport s that I had ordered a mere 40 days ago and begin its journey back to the Jersey shore.

Roughly 270 miles were traveled initally on the trip and not once did I even notice wind noise louder than any other wrangler I have owned. As a matter of fact, my wife drove it the next day and brought it to my attention how quiet it was.

I have been upwards of 90mph with it and am happy to say it's pretty quiet.

No death wobble, no flashing computer lights, no steering lockups, no welds exploding mid trip, nothing falling off,nothing rattling away, etc.. etc..

To me this wrangler is way better than every other model I have owned. I'm quite happy so far

@Bu3askoor , I agree with your findings as I seem to be getting more noticeable noise around the top front corner of my driver's door at this point. Not sure what goes into FCA's QA checks with doors, but it seems the top of the door on driver-side isn't as inset as the passenger front door is. I'm going into dealer on Thursday, so I'll find out their appetite for re-aligning that door or if it's just better to add some foam reinforcements around the top/leading edge of door.

Still, am I wrong to be excited for summer with no top and the wind noise drowning out any hope of a phone conversation?

As I dont want to read 58 pages of replies, Im going to ask my question so maybe its been discussed here or other threads.
It definitely “colder” out now so maybe I never noticed it before. Tho the win noise Ive always had, I am now noticing that the air is actually creeping in around the windshield. It always sounded like a window was cracked open and I just dealt with it, its worse than on my previous JK, and I never noticed air coming in on that vehicle. I put my hand up at the top of the windshield today on the way home from work and I could feel the air coming in. I did this because I could kinda feel the outside cold coming into the cab with all windows up. I will probably see if I can get some windshield molding or something and run it uo in there. Im driving to Co in a few weeks for Christmas and the wind noise would suck for 15 hours.
Anyone have/had this? Solutions?

Hi I just saw this and I am thinking I might be the other forum member you mentioned? I had the whistling noise and did tape my windshield to try and isolate it. Long story short, the dealer ended up trimming the gasket around the windshield and after that I’m happy to say the whistling was gone and has not returned. I hope this helps.

Thanks - They are actually replacing the entire windshield. Third-party installer. Will update once it's repaired.

Your windshield needs physically adjusted. Unless the molding is visibly damaged, then that won't fix anything. My windshield had a gap on the driver side door where it meets the top of the windshield.(I posted a pic a few pages back) I fixed this by folding the windshield down, loosening the bolts on the backside of the windshield that connect the hinge to the windshield, and scooting the windshield toward the driver side.I tightened up the bolts again, put the windshield back, and everything was fine again.

You can always try the same thing. You are basically just trying to get the windshield as square as possible. Its fairly obvious what way you need to move the windshield to close up the gap that you have. It takes very small adjustments, don't overdo it. Its better to do a bunch of small adjustments and tests instead of a large adjustment throwing the windshield completely out of whack.

I put two 2" long strips (1 for each panel) along the leading edge of the panels from the dip in the corner out to about where the header seal transitions from one material to another. this was due to the observation that where these two different materials meet, the seal seems to dip down. Additionally, I noticed that there's small gaps at the same point between header seal and windshield frame/header. Taking in to dealer to see about having entire header seal replaced and if not, having RTV put between header and header seal.

Hi @seguerski, what dealer said about your gap between header seal (transition material) to header? Interestingly, I found almost all new JL on dealer lot have that noticeable gap on both sides, so I suspect it is just a design flaw.

Did they end up replace your seal, or just chalk it up as "Jeep thing"? I actually do not think that will cause wind noise or leak, but OCD is killing me knowing there is a gap there, did you try black RTV?

Dealer was hesitant to replace (afraid of making things worse and all...). They will do the work, but I figured I'd try to do without Windshield header replacement (requires 4 rivets to be drilled out and then new piece riveted in). I did end up using black RTV to "fill" gaps.

Not sure it really did anything for the crackling sound I get on driverside, especially on windy days with maybe turbulence or cross winds.

New windshield completely resolved the whistle issue. Local glass company did the install. All good now.

Take painters tape and apply around the edge of the glass where it meets the frame - essentially you want to cover the rubber seal. Once you've covered the gap, take it for a spin, make sure you get up to highway speed. If the noise is gone its a fitment issue, meaning the glass is not seated correctly or the rubber seal has failed (I'm not an expert by any means). After this experiment I took it to the local dealership and they replaced the entire windshield.
