When calling a locksmith what exactly do you have to ask whether they can cut it? Is there a term for this type of key or the equipment the locksmith needs to cut it?

Didn’t know if asking for laser cut is enough information or if they need a specialized laser cutter.

Apparently the lazar cutting machine they use is quite pricey. Thousands of $ supposedly so most locksmiths do not have one.
I'll know more about terminology in a few days when I get the key blank, lazer cut. Will post specifics here.

Just ask if they can make a 2016 Jeep Fiat High Security Emergency Key, you don't care how they do it. My key was cut with a metal bit. The locksmith I used didn't stock the blanks, so I ordered my own. You may find a locksmith that already has them.

Here's some perspective for you luxury JL owners (Sport S and above) regarding why I wanted a basic key for unlocking the door. On a normal manual lock car, after you unlock the door, you tuck the key into your hand and reach for the door handle. With this key/fob, I found myself reaching for the door handle with the metal key spike sticking out just waiting to put a scratch in the door. So I still carry the fob in my pocket along with the plain key, which I use to unlock the door, leaving the fob in my pocket.

thats what i want to do. i checked and a new fob is 140 dollars. I might buy it and just take the key off and then hide the fob in a rfid bag for emergencies

Not sure what I did wrong, but I took the key off my fob, tried to get into my jeep and it would not unlock my door. I surf and need to keep a key in my leash ... obviously can't put the fob in there ... so thought it work. Now I'm seeing that it works for everyone else.

I had another forum member, email me to say he had the blank in the picture below cut to fit his JL.

So, IF you are in need of a non-chipped JL key and cannot find anyone locally, you could contact this locksmith, mail him your Fob and have him cut you a non-chipped key and then mail back to you the non-chipped key and your fob. Looks like it would be about $53.00 per cut, un-chipped key.

So, if you just cannot find anyone locally here is a way to go. Just be sure to insure your fob mailing package for say $300 when mailing in case it were to get lost.

After a lot of internet searching, I found a locksmith an hour a way that can Lazar cut the JL blank for me. Cost is $25 to cut the key.
Will have done in a few days and let you know how I make out. The locksmith said I had the proper blank. I got the info on what blank to buy in this thread.

Ok, I went to the locksmith today. He was able to cut the JL key!
He also drilled a hole in the key shaft for a key ring.

All local Jeep dealers and locksmiths said no way could they cut the JL key for me. Said I would have to get cut by Jeep (not at a Jeep dealership) using the Vin#.

I had two done. Total was $54.95 with NYS tax. I gave the guy $60. So, the two blanks purchased on eBay that were $8.63 + the $60 cut fee, ends up being $34.31 for each key. Of course, I had to drive 45 mins to the locksmith and back.

Guys be sure and save the tag you see in the photo. It contains the key code for your Jeep. My locksmith was having trouble matching the key but used the key code to do a perfect job!

My 2 fob's did not have that bar code tag on them when given to me. Undoubtedly, removed by the dealer. 8-(

Dealership parts department told me that FCA cuts keys based on VIN #. Dealership orders fob from FCA and the new fob with cut key is sent to the dealership who takes the fob with cut key and programs it along with the other fob(s) you have.

Unlike with past Wrangler's, dealership cannot cut the key. Dealership told me a tad over $160 for the fob with cut key from FCA.... Then you pay dealer $45+ to program the fob. So, out the door about $205+ to replace a fob.

IF, I ever need a new fob, I will buy a fob on say eBAY, have local locksmith (I found one that can do) cut the key and then have dealership program the fob's. Doing this will save me $50+ I believe.


Note: My locksmith did not need code to cut the blank. His machine just duplicated the key on the fob. Jeep dealership and a few other locksmiths said this was not possible but it was. 8-)

Thanks, glad to help. I don't mind manual locks, but the impact of the large fob and manual locks was the thing that caught me most off guard with this jeep.

I meant to post about this. I was expecting lock codes to be provided, but didn't notice they were missing until several days after purchase. My jeep was transferred from another dealer to the one I bought it from, so I'm not hopeful that they are available.

Thanks for the tip- my JL isn't even delivered and I just ordered two of these @ $2.40 ea + $1.31 shipping. I always prefer having a spare key hidden somewhere on the vehicle in case I lock the keys in there.

Update- Took delivery of my JL on June 1st. Brought my fob and these blanks to a local locksmith and he cut one of the blanks for $35. It works perfect.

Do you know why my key would not work when I detached it from the fob? It worked while attached.

What do you mean it did not work. Please explain.

The key itself...is not chipped. That key will mechanically lock and unlock door and that is it.

The fob is where the chip is. The chip is what communicates with the JL.
