I actually enjoy suspension and brake work. The only thing I can't do is get a good alignment.

I have done everything myself on mine except the re-gear and axle truss welding. I leave it up to professionals with professional tools for that.

Pretty tame stuff. Done for dramatic purposes (youtube). Reassembling is the part that needs care and, really, a stand spring compressor.

The only thing I don't do is balance my tires.

Oil change to a motor swap to full restorations. I've always done everything myself. Except tires because I dont have a tire machine ?
I'm a cheap sob and paying a shop to do the work that I enjoy as a hobby doesn't make sense.

As for the jeep I'm getting the regear outsourced as that's one thing I'd rather have someone else do for piece of mind

Learned everything from my dad who was an amazing shadetree mechanic and was in charge of a motor pool during the Korean War. Swapped a motor and rebuilt 2 with him. Amazing knowledge that he passed down to me.

He said “Give it a try, the worst that can happen is you call a tow truck!”. Tried to live by that. Of course things have changed since the 70’s and 80’s so I do my own research when needed. This forum is invaluable until we talk about oil brands and viscosity….lol.

I still do 80% of the all auto work, 95% if it saves me significant money. Done with rotating 35’s unless my son is around.

I stay away from transmissions……blew one up after installing a shift kit in the early 90’s. Changing the fluid in them sucks.

Damn I sure miss my dad…..great memories.

I've gone from everything and anything to SOME things over the past few decades.

I can't wrench the way I used to. Things creak and crack in my body more than my vehicles ?

After putting on a set of step rails on my '23, I realized that's about as much as I can handle now without maiming myself lol

I still enjoy doing cosmetic stuff myself as well as interior stuff. But I leave the big maintenance and mods to pros now ?

Haha Chevy 235 for my 51 chevy 3600, mostly stock, bored .040 over, Hei, split headers, just waiting on a $100 rear main seal to come in than it can get thrown back together. Crazy only one company makes it so a 10$ part can be upcharged

1. do you do all your own work on the Jeep?
2. why do you do your own work?
3. If you do your own work, when do you decide to let someone else do something and why?
4. If you don’t do your own work, Why don’t you do it?
1. Most, not all; this applies to everything with wheels.
2. After 30+ years of building my tool set and my skill set, it'd be silly to not put both to work.
3. Either the task is beyond my ability, or, much less frequently, because it's more convenient to bunt (e.g., requesting a full tire rotation during the annual state inspection appt., when two wheels need to be removed anyway to check the pads & rotors.)
4. N/A

I do all of my own work, at least I try to do all my own work and have been able to so far. My father owned a car repair business for over 60 years, I worked there for some amount of time and learned a lot.

I don't work on automatic transmissions and I'm limited in how much I can do to A/C systems so hopefully I won't have problems with either of those.

Do most of the work myself. I find it calming. Until 10 seconds passes and I can’t find that tool that was just in my hand.

If I don’t do it myself, who else is going to mindlessly scroll forums looking for parts they definitely don’t need but clearly must have.

I’ll do most anything. I don’t do the oil because it came free for life of vehicle. I won’t do body work/paint but I’ve done all mods including mopar lift kit and electrical mods to my jeep, she only came with power running boards. I’ve been mechanically inclined since a kid. So this is right up my alley. I enjoy modding
