Hi, so I recently decided to change my head gasket myself on my 3.6 JL. While I was in the process of reinstalling my cylinder heads, I realized not only did I over torque the head bolts but I also torque them down in the wrong sequence. Once I was aware, I immediately un torqued all the bolts and started over with the correct torquing pattern.

I’m curious if I should take the heads back off and change out the gasket or is the gasket that is currently still in place fine even though the head were over torqued?

Service procedure states to remove the bolts and inspect them for necking. They may have been overstretched, or may be totally fine. If you're unsure go ahead and replace the head bolts.

That being said, you're probably fine. The gasket will be fine. The issue that could've arisen is the bolts being torqued passed their yield threshold causing them to loosen over time resulting in another blown head gasket.

Welcome to the Forum!
All bolts have a stretch point. Once that one goes past that, then they have been weakened. I would install a new set of head bolts.

Thank you!
I appreciate the advice. I did end up going with new bolts but stripped one on the way out😔 so now I'm considering Timeserts.

Thanks for the rec. Those may be a little out of the budget considering the cost of the Timesert kit. I bout the OEM bolts from the dealership for now but if I end up opening this engine again, I'll definitely go for these studs.
Oh, you probably will. By then, how many sets of single use bolts will you go through?
