Anyone that's gone on a road trip(or maybe just driving locally) through hills/mountains experiences constant downshifting and up shifting especially in cruise control.

Rubicon, lifted on 35's here.

How bad is this for the engine/transmission?

Did you recalibrate the speedometer?

Mine did that when I drove through the mountain pass west of Denver, it really couldn't decide which gear it wanted to be in for a while. Stock Moab suspension and tires.

Did it even on stock tires and suspension.

Was constant just driving on a level highway to work against head winds and just maintaining speed.

That cant be good for the transmission, gears, engine

If in conditions where the transmission is constantly "hunting", choose a lower gear. Combinations of weather, load and terrain can cause this on occasion, regardless of vehicle.

Why? That is what the multi-speed transmission is designed to do - optimize engine rpm for power and torque.

Im not to concerned...after doing a lot of reading and research on this transmission before I bought my rig, I think it’s doing what it’s supposed to be doing. IMHO, this is one of, if not, the best auto transmissions out there, even fca’s version of it.......:).

Yes I understand that very much...but constantly must not be all that good

Hunting is a pretty rapid search. If it’s shifting up and down a few times a minute that’s not that big of a deal. Going up mountain roads mine will do this.

You could always switch to manual mode and downshift to a lower gear if you are climbing and it is having a hard time finding a sweet spot. It's a good transmission but it can't see ahead like you can.

In all honestly when it gets that bad with shifting I shut off cruise and manually feather the throttle to stay in preferred gear.
