I wanted to do just a drain and fill on my transmission oil.

Says I need zf lifeguard 8, 8 quarts.

Other than the oil drain, what else is needed?

Kinda related, but want to do the transfer case and diffs as well. I'm nearing 90k and forgot the diffs!

I'll study at youtube University once I get all the things I need.

Refill procedure:

Fill until it drips out of the fill plugs
Start the engine
Fill it until it starts dripping out again

Honestly you should be replacing the filter as well which is part of the pan. Part is like $200.

Everything you need to know about the transmission service is in this thread:

https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/fo...ission-service-diy-how-to-instructions.94302/

The transfer case amd differentials are straight forward drain and fill. The tranny has a few extra steps.

As always, loosen the fill plugs before you drain any fluid to ensure you'll be able to fill it up.

Later model JL's don't have a drain plug on the diffs, so you have to remove the cover to drain.

i bought a new jeep trans pan and wielded a drain plug on bottom . decided on a aluminum pan instead. little larger and they said it gets rid of more heat build up. was fun to do after several weeks of worrying about what could go wrong. put a plastic clear hose into the fill plug opening was able to suck ever drop out without making a mess using a tool i had when i did a/c ref repair a vacuum pump and a old freon tank that was empty and i fastened some fittings on tank

Is the filter necessary? Considering jeep says it's a lifetime transmission.

If so, yeah I'll get the filter.

I believe a senior engineer at Jeep was quoted as saying that “lifetime” actually meant 60K miles.

If I remember right the filter was certainly NOT $200…

https://www.moparpartsgiant.com/parts/mopar-filter-transmission-oil~68059549aa.html

More like $40

And if you drop the pan you will need a new gasket which is like $20-$30.

It’s not a hard job. 2 good videos on YouTube about it.
More like $200, you are quoting pre 2011 transmission

ZF, who designed the 8-speed transmission, recommend a fluid and filter change at ~60K miles. "Lifetime fill" as used in the Owner's Manual is, IMO, a fiction that is merely intended to get the vehicle to the end of the Powertrain warranty, after which all costs are on the owner's dime.

The filter, factory part 68417054AB, can be purchased for approx. $40, depending on the source and whether you choose OEM or aftermarket.

A pan gasket purchase is recommended, just in case you need it. I didn't, but there was peace of mind in having one on hand.

Note that only 5.5 quarts of transmission fluid, on average, will drain out during each service, despite system capacity being approx. 9 quarts. That's why performing the job at least twice (3 times is best), with 1K driven miles in between each time, is recommended to maximize the evacuation of old fluid.

The thread linked in post #3 is an excellent resource for the DIYer. I referred to it when my selling dealer refused to perform the transmission fluid & filter exchange, leaning heavily on the aforementioned "Lifetime fill" language. I purchased the necessary supplies and got to work, saving many hundreds of $$ in labor costs by doing so.

That's interesting, I've dropped a few Mopar ZF transmission pans and never seen one where the filter was bolted in.

Do you happen to know if this is the same filter part number for both the 50 and 75 series of the ZF transmission. I am asking, because my JL is a diesel with the 75 series. I have seen mixed info on different boards and want to confirm before placing an order. I asked my local Jeep dealer and they got a dumbfounded look on their face and provided no help.

Thanks in advance.

I linked to the confirmed filter for the 850RE. If you've the 8HP75 in your Jeep, you'll want to determine the correct filter for that transmission.
