ask for the particular code or statute that applies to you. Then go study up.

LOL In my case it wasn't intentional per se but the results were swift and very costly. I had a car that the registration was paid on, but smog was due, and I couldn't get it smogged since I was in the middle of top-end work. After getting it running, tuned, etc about 6 months later, the day I was driving it to get smogged, not busting the speed limit or anything - but just because my tags were expired I got pulled over. And impounded. It took me two days to get temp tags, and $1500 in impound fees to get my car back. This was in Roseville...

Just saying that there are cops out there who are super dicks about it.

FTFY
Ca PITA- kinda similar without cops.
trans found, installed. Went to insurance Can’t insure without current registration. OK, stood in the long line at DMV Can’t register without proof of insurance. Nice Catch 22. Back to ins Get a permit to move it. DMV line again for moving permit and back to ins for temporary policy. Temp policy to 3’rd DMV line for registration. 4’th trip to ins for policy. Next stop to get 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺. Lovely day.

I won't deny that some of the current compliance hoops for emissions in CA, or any other CARB state for that matter, do seem sometimes excessive. Whenever people complain about exhaust standards in California specifically, I remind them of this:

https://www.pbssocal.org/shows/lost-la/l-a-s-smoggy-past-in-photos

And OP referred to California as "Cali" which suggests that he hasn't been around long enough or had family members who remember post-war air quality in Southern California. Trust me it was BAD. Unless you like Beijing-level air quality of course.

On an unrelated note: OP @JLeco2022 , wish you the best luck on your chemo. Cancer sucks and am sorry to hear you have to deal with it.

I took it as the OP (mistakenly ) thought CA DMV was wrongfully forcing him pay to smog his vehicle before it was legally required. But folks in CA know our DMV is a well oiled machine that never makes a mistake and has excellent customer service.

I was born in whittier, the air quality was not from the cars, it was caused by the oil plants i grew up by that are now gone.

Things like this, and how bad the air is in the valley, or hell even how bad it is here on the plains in CO are exactly why my initial knee-jerk reaction to anyone who complains about emissions stuff is that they should be forced to directly breathe exhaust fumes for a week or so. Mind you not at "suicide in the garage" levels, but enough to get why as painful as it is, emissions equipment is worth it - as a person who has dealt with most of the "worst" diesel emissions equipment issues over the years.

(And yes, I know that these days more than half of that is from ag dust etc, but it still exemplifies the point of why any air pollution is a problem.)

I witnessed an accident and dutifully reported to the investigating officer. I soon got contacted by my ins about not reporting my accident, WTF. Contacted DMV, they had me as involved in the accident. I went through the PITA appeals process only to get
Our records report you as involved in the accident, and will stand.… ever since

😂 Time efficient as well. Only took me 11 months to get my vanity plate.

OP never said anything about pollution, he’s aggravateEd that the state requires smog checks on a new vehicle.
Smog=pollution.
County required an inspection of my hot water heater last month, life's tough.

Do they do that often with water heaters in NJ and do they make you replace if yours fails inspection?

I'm just curious because I've been dealing with my water heater all week and just spent a couple of hours replacing some parts to get it more "up to code".

Mine failed late a night so my best option was to call Home Depot who must have a contract with a local company.
Ten hours later they installed my water heater and said THEY applied with the permit automatically and I just had to schedule a inspection on my own.
The guy from the Township came and was in and out in 5 minutes.
I think it might be more of a Township ordinance than a NJ one.
But in the end it'd nice to have another set of eyes on someone elses work.
