Cali Smog notice

So got the jeep brand new in 22, got a smog notice from cali. so 2 years after I bought it, which is funny because I bought my wifes suburban in 2020 and still has yet to need smog. i hate this state so much, that is all

That’s odd. You shouldn’t need a smog check on a new vehicle until year 7 in CA.

Years 1-6 you do pay a smog abatement fee instead.

Somethings wrong with that. Shouldn’t receive one for 7 years unless it’s a diesel which is 2 years I believe.

You should call them because if you got a notice your Jeep needs a smog check then that’s a mistake.

My guess is that your suburban is not a diesel...

its and age thing, all vehicles after 1976 require smog, diesels after 1998

If that is for the Eco Diesel listed in your profile, then yes, you are due for a Smog Check. In CA, it is due every 2 years for diesel vehicles.

What vehicles require a Smog Check?

Gasoline-powered vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and alternative-fuel vehicles that are model-year 1976 and newer require a Smog Check, with the following exceptions:

• Eight model years and newer do not require a biennial Smog Check.
• Four model years and newer do not require a change-of-ownership Smog Check.

To determine the first year a vehicle requires a biennial or change-of-ownership Smog Check, add eight or four, respectively, to the model year of a vehicle.


For example, a 2020 model-year vehicle will first be subject to a biennial Smog Check in 2028 (2020 + 8 = 2028). That same vehicle will require a change-of-ownership Smog Check if sold in or after 2024 (2020 + 4 = 2024).

My point is that the reason you have to smog your Jeep after 2 years old and not the suburban after 2 years old is because your Jeep is a diesel and your suburban probably isn't.

Police will pull you over if your stickers aren't up to date, and they will impound your vehicle on the spot. Even if your paperwork shows that your registration is paid and up to date. I know this from firsthand experience.
