Wondering if anyone can help with some advice to DIY this repair.

I purchased one of the first JLUs and am unfortunately 3 months past my corrosion warranty. This was the first time Ive ever purchased a new car. Ive never needed to use a car warranty so I didnt think of going in for the issue sooner. My dealers body shop ballparked about $10,000 for the repairs out of pocket since the corrosion is on every door and hinge including hood and tailgate.

I used the service bulletin to talk to my dealer's parts department and they have lots of the new hinges in stock with the new zinc shim. I can get 12 hinges unpainted for about $1300. I think I can get them powdercoated for less than $200. I have a black jeep so the color should be close enough. Im wondering how I should tell them to tape off the zinc portion of the hinge though - they need to get edge on the back but not the zinc I think. Any advice?

If I take off the doors one at a time, I can sand off the corroded part. Id just need primer, top coat, and clear coat sprays after that with very fine grit sanding in between. Im not that experienced in this kind of work but I would research more and im pretty confident i could figure it out. Or maybe I can take the doors off and ask a body shop to spray for me too.

Im thinking this is going to be the cheapest way to preserve my Jeep for another 5 years before the corrosion keeps spreading. Hopefully the cost would come to $2000-$2500 if im lucky.

If someone thinks they can talk me out of this I would really appreciate it.

Suggest returning those hinges and buying them elsewhere. You've been charged around 50% mark-up on suggested retail!
A 68282145-AC hinge retails for $145 ea, MOPAR Parts Giant sells them for $95.35 ea.

Me “there is a little bit of paint bubbling by the hinges. Is there anything you can do about it?“
Jeep dealer‘s body shop manager “sure…your JL is 4 years old…let’s take a look….(2 days later)….Warranty claim approved….
How about 4 new doors, new hinges, new hood and a complete paint job with lifetime warranty?”
Me “Oh…ok….Thanks…”

Dropped mine off for inspection etc... waiting for call to see what they are going to replace.... both frt doors are blistered badly... noticed a small spot under the lip of the hood...
All hinges are bubbled....

Mgr. said that they have the updated hinges in stock.... they only extend the remainder of the 5yr warranty , which is July of 2024..... no lifetime warranty

RETIRED!
Just my luck!

It's hasn't even been 30 days since I got my Jeep back from the body shop for all the corrosion repairs.

I walked past it yesterday and noticed a new blister on the left side of the hood just a few inches from the hood latch. Same place it was blistered before the repair but the blister is a different shape!

I stopped by the body shop this morning so they could look at it. He said that he would contact the dealer and see if they can get approval for a new hood. He suspects there is contamination in the aluminum. :(

Thats too bad. At some point I hope there’s some legal recourse for all of us who had this corrosion disaster!

That is solid customer service!
I took mine to my local dealer and was told to take it to a suggested body shop.
Body shop guy said yes it needs to be fixed.
Dealer said sorry we won’t approve it go somewhere else?
Went to the dealer close to the body shop who said yes we will help you, confirmed I’m within warranty and will make an appointment when a loaner comes available.
Four months later I decided to forego the loaner and went to make an appointment.
Dealer said sorry we’re out of our allowance from Jeep to fix yours.
What?
Something doesn't sound right?

I just got mine back in Friday....all 4 doors and hood painted. Replaced all door hinges and hood hinges (hood only had very small bubble forming on front lower lip) ...Mgr. says if they remove the panel, the hinges must be replaced..

Paint matches very close, average person would not notice (I'm a perfectionist).. in the sun it looks slightly lighter? But otherwise, happy with their work. Never realized that Sting Gray has super fine metallic in the mix...probably why it looks slightly different color in different lighting ...

The manager said they have NEVER been declined by Jeep for repairs... told me my blisters were not excessive enough to warrant replacement doors. Saw the pictures they sent to Jeep... no deep pitting etc....

That’s right, something isn’t right, don’t know why I’m getting the runaround.
The body shop guy was saying that if there is corrosion on the seam of a door or hood they replace them.
Paint match is a concern for me also but if the color is off just enough for me top notice and no one else it’s better than corrosion.
I was trying to use this issue to warrant a new Jeep but the boss saw right through that. Denied!
Mine was all on outer surface, did not go under the lip of the door to the seam... was hoping for some doors...

For all the forum naysayers in this thread that say they know the
5 year corrosion warranty is either:

a) Only valid for 3 years maximum - as per FCA documentation
b) Only valid if there are actual perforation holes through the metal

They are fortunately 100% wrong and completely full of BS.

Case in point:
This is our 3rd and last time in for corrosion warranty repairs
Our 5 year corrosion warranty expired about a month ago
Dealer got a time extension because panels were on backorder
Dealer is not the Dealer that originally sold the JL
This is our bright yellow JL loaner for the next week or so - Haha!

So Conclusions - Believe who and what you want to believe
But get any paint bubbling from corrosion repaired earlier vs later
Definitely make sure to get it approved before 5 years are up
Since FCA is very sticky about that - 1 day over - you may be SOL

Find a Dealer who knows all about this and wants to help you
Since a few look to be 100% certified complete idiots and buffoons
Turning their back on FCA customers with a valid warranty claim
It is what it is

Got a call today from the dealer that is going to do the repair for the corrosion and said they scheduled my Jeep for the 17th of July. New doors, hood and all but one hood hinge are in. The hood hinge is currently back ordered but they have a source to get one if mine doesn’t come in.

Wow, you're so lucky!

I am so frustrated with this issue over here in Europe.

I contacted Jeep Germany, where I have purchased my JL, they have told me that I need to take it to Jeep Austria as that was the original destination country, so I did approach Jeep Austria but they told me that I need to work it our with Jeep Slovakia, because the car is currently registered in Slovakia and Jeep Slovakia told me, that it has 24m of warranty and it is not covered anymore and suggested to go to Jeep Austria... so the circle has closed, no help or support from any Jeep whatsoever. So I am left alone with the issue.

I am thinking of putting a huge sign on the doors saying something like "Don't buy Jeep unless you want to spent 60k for such terrible quality and no coverage and help from Jeep!."

Just picked up the JLUR from the body shop dealer.

Black paint application and match looks perfect. Paint smoothness is better than the orange peel factory paint. Manager informed that they just get a primed shell from FCA parts. So they need to remove everything - then transfer over to the new panels. He informed that everything went smoothly and the transferred components were in excellent condition.

Went about as simple and seamless as one could imagine.

Unfortunately some dealers are complete idiots. Some countries have idiotic corrosion warranty restrictions. Best of luck getting this done. There actually are some excellent body shop dealers with smart informed staff. Just gotta find them.

After having 5 doors done and noticing is was slightly coming back after less than a year I have sold the Jeep. I also noticed the edge of the front hood was also starting to bubble. Enjoyed the Jeep while I had it. Probably was the most fun auto I have owned.

Mine's gonna be outta here as soon as I get it back from the body shop....if and when that ever happens. My dealer has been pretty bad to deal with through this whole thing.
