I'm new to the group. Has anyone removed their hinges and coated the aluminum doors with something(gasket, primer, sealant, etc)and bolt the hinges back on before the paint started bubbling? I'm thinking tis may be easier than waiting for it to start corroding. It seems every wrangler jl will have this problem at some point. Thanks

I'm curious about this too?
I don't have any corrosion on my door hinges "yet" and would like to prevent it from happening down the road.

I thought about this myself. But it's difficult enough to get a warranty rust claim as it is. If your modification doesn't work, they WILL NOT cover you, no matter what.

Unless you try something invisible or reversible (vinyl, plastidip?)

I'll probably just leave mine (hopefully with the new gasket) once it comes in.

I callled my dealer and she was well aware of this problem. They will be taking pictures and measurements of the bubbling and submitting it to fiat. I’ll put updates on what the next step are.

1 or 2 people in this thread have done this and provided a detailed write-up with photos. Buried somewhere in this thread if you look back.

On the plus side, this is a proactive step that very likely could prevent the issue from occurring if done right.

On the down side, if done prior to expiration of warranty and you still get corrosion bubbles, it is unlikely Jeep would cover it.

In my opinion, the TSB to repair the issue doesn't go far enough and more should be done.

AND, Jeep should fix the issue at the factory level so new Jeeps won't have this problem!

They spend millions of dollars on R&D. I find it hard to believe that they don't know about the issues with using 'dissimilar metals' (i.e. aluminum next to steel without a barrier will result in corrosion).

maybe they’ve changed. My 2021 Sahara has the gasket material on all hinges I could see

What is your build date? I just looked at my Snazzberry JL build date 10//11/21 and I don't see a gasket.

Since the doors are painted with the hinges on, the seam between the two is bonded by the paint. Removing the hinge would break that bond and you'd probably end up with cracked/chipped paint around the hinge.

Mine was built 02/14/22. I'm pretty sure there is a "gasket" in there. It's so hard to tell.

I just checked my hinges, doors and hood with a magnet. I see many posts about steel hinges touching the bare aluminum door. The magnet does not hold on the hinges. It seems the only thing that's steel are the bolts attaching the hinges to the jeep. Is all the corrosion caused by the steel bolts and receiving nuts in the door making contact with the hinge and door? Jeep has a TSB #31-002-20 showing how to repair corrosion. I can't get an exact cause or preventive measure from them. I'm tying to do something preventative before I start getting corrosion.

#1 for me

And again no call back from the dealer today after he said yesterday that he would call me in the morning! Thinking of selling my jeep to Carmax for more than I owe and getting a non Chrysler vehicle!
Must be your referring to Dave Dennis Jeep

So they have changed the painting process? They have always painted the door with the hinges already attached. Doesn't look like they are doing that any longer? ?
If the Toledo plant does it similar to a competitor's assembly plant that I'm familiar with, the vehicle still goes through the paint process with the doors attached. Thus, no paint between the hinges and body.

When it exits the paint department the doors are removed so that it makes things easier to install the IP, seats, etc., inside the vehicle. The doors are later reattached on the body and that's when this new gasket is installed.
