This is good in theory and will work most of the time. In my case though, my last flat was when I put a railroad spike through it. As I would jack up the axle the tire would just fill up with air and reinflate. This left me no room underneath the tire to shove a 4x4 under it.

I know most people aren't going to get a railroad spike through their tire (I was on the transcontinental Train Road in Western Utah) but a blown sidewall would have the same effect. I never tried your "4x4" method when I had my flat but it would have been hard to get one under there without someone else's help and I was alone.
Fortunately I don't intend to run tires large enough to have this problem.

You couldn't remove the wheel once the axle weight was on the jack (instead of the rim)?

In case you need a place to store the jack so you don’t have it loose and ready to be a flying object in a crash. I put a Harbor Freight jack in the factory location, with just a little notch in the body.

Not until I got it up high enough that I could install the tire too. Like I said it took a big chunk out of it I imagine if I yanked it hard enough it may have come off but I try not to do that when my Jeep's on a jack. I knew I needed to get it high enough to put the spare on anyway. I was also proud of myself for being able to lift the spare back on. It was 37's and I'm old and fat...
