I was out wheeling about two weeks ago and I somehow popped the bead on my front tire. I was aired down to about 20psi. These are also stock wheels with KO2's on the Rubicon. Regardless, when I looked closer, I noticed that there was some gravel and dirt stuck on the tire rim where it was leaking, which leads me to believe it couldn't seal because there was junk stuck in it.

I changed it and took it over to discount tire. They were nice about it and didn't charge me for the repair. They did say there was some junk in the tire and it should be fine. About a week later and noticed the psi dropped. I put some soap around the bead and noticed that it's still leaking. The only thing I did was drop the psi from the ~40psi when I got it back from discount tire to about 34psi, but I don't think that should affect the sealing.

I'm trying to figure out what my next step is. Is it normal for the beads to do this? Should I take it back to the same discount tire? Go to a different discount tire? Go to a firestone place or an NTB?

Thanks!

It depends on what damage was done to the bead. Can you pop the bead and check it out?
I've never done this before. Do I just take the wheel off the Jeep, let all the air out, and press on the seal to take a look at it? What would I be looking for?

Before discount tire, I tried to seal it myself using a ratchet strap and failed.

Thanks!

There is a bead hump built into the wheel so when you push on the bead you really have to push to get the tire off the wheel.

If you don't have the tools to remove the tire a trip back to the tire store would be a good idea.

Thanks. I feel bad going back there because they didn't charge me and they were really cool about it all....but I kind of just want to not fill my tire up with air every day or two. :)

Thanks!

Well, I took it back to Discount Tire today. I walked in and told them I brought it in last week because the bead popped. A guy came over and said that the rim was corroded. I told him it's new and there's only 4k miles on it. Then he asked if I was offroading, which I said I was. He said that there was too much dirt and junk stuck in the tire to prevent it from sealing and said the fix was to replace the tire. I told him thanks and ended up leaving.

Called another place and they said they are too busy to look at it for at least a week.

I'm getting the feeling that because I'm not buying a new tire, and that it's just a tire repair, not many people are going to want to touch it.

Plenty of local places sell tire spoons. You can thank me now for suggesting it. You can curse me when you're finished for suggesting it.

Find a locally owned tire store. Have them take the tire off, then you can clean the tire and wheel before they put it back on. It might cost you $20, but it should be worth your time/$.

I second this, take it to a mom & pop tire shop, it'll be like $10-$20 and they'll help you out immediately. My local small tire shop I go to would dunk the tire in a tank of water afterwards to check their repair work or to locate the leak.

The tire bead may be damaged. Maybe pay a tire shop to remove the tire from the wheel and do a detailed inspection the the wheel and the tire. The Hunter tire balancer can detect wheel runout and also measure road force variation of the tire.

Take it to a local tire shop and have them apply bead seal around the tire. That should solve your problem.

Thanks all for the suggestions. A long time ago I needed a patch. Took it to NTB and they refused, saying there isn't enough tread left. I took it to a local mechanic and they did it for $20. I don't mind paying them for their services. It helps them and helps me from buying a brand new tire and saves me frustrations.

I asked my local jeep club and they gave a suggestion of a tire place. I *think* it's a local place, as there's only two locations. I think I'm going to try there next. Unfortunately though, there's not many mom and pop places left anymore.
