My JL has 24,500 miles on it. Its been sitting a week as I have been enjoying the nice weather in my YJ. Last night it dropped 30 degrees here in northern South Carolina. I left before sunrise to get some breakfast. I noticed immediately my backup camera was not working again. I can count one one hand the number of times it has happened. Its just annoying. I will go out later today and the camera will be working again.

I just cant see letting the dealer tear up my jeep trying to fix this.

What fuse leads to the camera or anything related to its functioning?

I've already had my radio swapped out trying to fix this about 6 months ago. No luck. New radio has all the same issues as the old one. I'm up to 8 times this has happened to me between the two radios. It doesn't appear to be weather related. It sounds like a SW race condition during boot. Perhaps something a watchdog timer could be added for to reset the camera again if it didn't take the first time.

Hi All,
Just this morning my back up camera stopped working.
Whe I shift into Reverse nothing happens on the screen, even when I press the back up camera icon nothing changes.
Anybody had this experience,
will give it another try later today, hopefully it will reset by itself
This happened to be today out of no where. Do you know what the fix is?

It will fix itself the next time the system does a full power cycle (after the Jeep sits for a few hours). It will eventually break again, but most of the time it works fine. It's a Jeep thing.

So I just bought a used 2018 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk, 18k miles on it. I estimate the backup camera works less than half of the time. Most of the time it's just a black screen, once in a while the picture will be there but frozen. Other times it works fine.

I saw one lady post that it happens if you put the Jeep in reverse before letting the UConnect load fully. I also seem to notice this. I've also noticed that if it's not working, it won't work at all until perhaps turning off the car and turning it back on (IE, running errands without turning off the vehicle, the backup camera doesn't work the entire time the Jeep is on).

From what I've found, this seems to be a big problem with the Jeep. Isn't this a huge safety risk that merits some kind of safety recall notice?

Is this kind of thing covered under warranty if I took it in to the dealership? Usually safety recalls are free...

Thanks,

Josh

No safety recall notice yet. It's definitely a problem. My uconnect was already swapped out once for it and it is happening much less often with the new uconnect (though it does still happen).

The issue most of us have getting any warranty coverage is reproducing it in front of the service personnel. It's not something I can make happen on demand, and they usually have zero interest in watching my cell phone video as proof.

But my replacement unit, while not perfect, seems to be more reliable than the first one.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah you would think with enough people complaining it would happen. This post is 14 pages, and I saw several other posts with the same problem reported.

For me it works less often than it works. I'd say 70% or more. I'm confident I could show a service personnel the problem, but if the replacement does the same, I don't see the point in it. Sounds like they need a full on hardware and/or software update in some kind of new replacement, not just replacing it with something that still doesn't work.

I have a brand new 2020 JLU Rubicon that I spent 62K on with every option and on numerous occasions the reverse baxk up camera goes black and does not work! Dealership said everything's fine but the issue keeps reoccurring.

The issue resolves itself overnight but still this should not be happening. Let me know how to this issue gets resolved if it does. Thanks!

I filed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last night. I suggest you do the same, probably the only way this will get resolved via a safety recall. I also included a link to this forum in my complaint.

No worries on that... UConnect was probably interrupted in boot up process......so, that is why cam was affected.... went temporarily, awol.

You can do a fuse pull if you do not to wait... but after your JL is stop, started a bunch of times, the cam will start working again. (Unless there is a real hardware issue, etc.)

You can hurry things along lets say, with the F97 fuse pull. While your JL is running, pull F97, wait say 15 seconds and then plug the fuse back in.. that usually, will get your cam right back.

If you are having Camera issues, camera gone/missing suddenly, heed this....

It is is best, to start the JL, wait a few seconds and when UConnect is up, you place the JL in reverse.

Many JL Owner's, report rear camera issues (camera not coming on/ is awol, green lines, etc.) if you just start the JL and quickly place it into reverse, before UConnect has a chance to boot up.

Thank you for the detailed info Iā€™m going out to check it shortly. I left Jeep home and was gone all day after I had this issue.
