SmartStopStart has an OBDII device that can shut off the auto stop for Jeeps. Runs about $130-150.

When the engine stops, what happens to the climate system? Because in cold weather if you leave your hvac on and your engine off, your windows will fog up in no time.

Depends on what your system is set on and whether it’s reached optimum air quality...

The fan will run and if you've set it to climate control, it likely will start the engine back when the heater core drops below the needed temperature.

In hot weather, if you'r running the AC set to a low temperature, the compressor stops because it's run by the engine and you'll immediately notice an increase in temperature. Afaik, there are next to no vehicles that'll run the AC compressor using an electric motor although it sounds like a no brainer.

I drove a Cherokee with Auto Start/Stop. Hated it. The restart time isn't the most responsive and sometimes you're foot is already on the gas before the engine has completely started which causes hesitation when starting to go. I only drove it once, so I wasn't use to it. I can say I've read a ton of complaints about this feature. Definitely will be shutting off. I saw a video on youtube of people that can delay the stop function in their uconnect settings on other jeep vehicles. Not sure if that will be available though. Otherwise yes, you can shut off when you start the vehicle. You have to do this every time.

If you live in very hot climate areas, this is a big negative. The Ford F-150's with this have been hard to live with at long signal lights, other makes maybe also?

I guess I will be buying the OBD Smart-Start-Stop module ($150) to defeat the stupid system.

I can speak for some Mercedes, Audi and Toyota models. It has the same effect as running the AC with the engine turned off on a regular (non-electric) vehicle. Essentially it's like running the fan without the AC.

In a post last year, the maker wasn’t sure if he could update the OBD2 dongle for the new encrypted ECU earlier. I don’t know if this position has changed recently.

But I’d prefer not losing my OBDII port or paying $150 if we can figure it out, especially something just one & done.

I would think that engine stop and start would cause more engine wear because when you stop no oil pressure then your doing a start and loaded acceleration would cause more wear. I think I will be disabling it when I drive.

Car manufacturers are way ahead of you. We've had start/stop over here for years, so they've had plenty of experience with this.

Here's a fairly simplistic explanation: https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/stop-start-long-term-impact-your-car-s-engine

And here's Federal Mogul talking about those Irox bearings:-

I have kept up with it minimally since buying a GC. The smartstopstart maker, because of Jeep's new OBD2 firewall, has located a plug in location under the seat. Now this is for the GC and I don't know if he is trying or knows it's compatible with the JL.

I don't like it but no big deal, just hit start then hit ess off everytime and its off, no big deal
My wifes GC has this and i don't like it; however pushing the button to turn it off when I start the vehivle is second nature now and I don't even think about it.

I test drove a Rubi last night and the ESS was almost transparent. The saleswoman had to point out that the engine kicked off at the first stop light. Engine starts as soon as you release the brake and I fired the motor so fast I'd be hard pressed to see any problems with it. In fact, I doubt I could race from the brake to the gas and beat the engine restart.

I was concerned with it too, thinking I'd program it out. Now, not so sure. It's really hard to notice.
