My dealership does the same ... fills it with 6 quarts when only 5 is necessary. They say they are instructed to fill 6 even though the dipstick shows it overfilled. I remove the extra quart when I get home.

And problems like this are why I do all my own work.

I feel for the non-gearheads here who don't have the knowledge, tools or garage space for that option. Make sure you verify what's going on!

I even tell folks to pop the hood right there in the parking lot to confirm the oil level, filter is tight (or even replaced!), fill cap is back on and tight, etc.

It is a shame to me that we have to verify that even the simplest of work was done right. More so considering these are oil change guys!

Granted, most oil changes at a dealer or quick lube place go without issue, but just enough does go wrong to make you wonder, by the time you realize there is an issue, its too late.

This happens regularly on JLs & JTs. We have five JTs in tour service and I have a JT for my daily. I can't count the times shops have put in 6 qts and I have to have them drain out a quart. They seem to never learn, even when shown the manual.

They messed up, plus they put Made in Republic of Congo oil in your Jeep. Do it yourself and put this goodness in your Jeep, 3 jugs for $69

Why do you keep telling people to get 0W-20 oil when you have made countless ridiculous posts about not using it, and everyone should be using Euro spec?

LOL. If you’re going to take it in for an oil change, then take it home and take a quart out, why don’t you just change it yourself to begin with? I can’t imagine the mess you make; oil in the drain pan, on your hands and trying to “catch” a quart exactly. It would be a whole lot easier to just do the oil change to begin with. The two Wranglers I own are the easiest to do compared to my diesel GMC Denali HD or my Chevrolet Traverse. Just slide under remove the drain plug and the filter is up top; just grab a piece of paper towel to put under the cartridge when you pull it out so it doesn’t drip on anything in the engine compartment. In my opinion removing a quart is more work than the entire oil change.

Honestly I’d think someone at the dealership management team would be all over a lube techs butt about adding six quarts when it calls for five. That’s money out the window for every extra quart added. Do you really think the Jeep Wave or Jeep Cares program pays for the extra quart? Heck no. Based on the VIN the dealership only gets paid for what the engine requires.

My dealer did the same thing to my 2022 Rubicon; put in 6 quarts on the 3 free oil changes. I just ran it. Since I use the Jeep off-road a lot, I generally only run about 3000 miles before an oil change anyway. Doesn’t seem to have harmed it. A year and a half ago I bought a pre-owned 2021 Willys out of state to drive in the winter. The dealer had gone through it and replaced engine and cabin filters, oil changes, windshield wipers, and guess what? Yup 6 quarts of oil. I drove it a couple thousand miles and changed it. Seems to be just fine.

A friend of mine, Paul owns a small mechanic shop. His top notch mechanic resigned. He started the hiring process and gave a young man a try. His first task was a simple oil change. Paul saw thus said young man putting the oil plug back on with an impact gun. Paul picked that boy up by his buster browns and escorted him to the nearest door.
k, just curious.. Why did Paul replace his Top Notch mechanic with a young man (I'm assuming early/no career experience)? That makes no sense.

Second, instead of firing the guy, why didn't he correct (teach) the behavior?

Anyway, me thinks something is screwed up in Jeep's system. The 6qt thing is persistent and I know the gen 1 Pentastar used to take 6 quarts, but that was a long time ago. PUG has always been 5. Where do the oil techs get their information?

Overfilling creates aeration which reduces lubrication.
Which dealer...? I stopped going some years back, and we only have but so many in the Charlotte area. I've been to Ft Mill and CDJR in Pineville.

He didn't have any certified mechanics apply. The young boy applied and listed extensive experience on his application. Plus an automechanics major in school. He bull s**t his way in. I guess the oil change was his try out, he failed.

good question ... because the oil change is free at the dealership. Will do my own once the free ones run out. It does not make a mess at all when removing the quart .

Yeah I trusted all you monsters when I did my first oil change. Bought one 5 quart jug of engine juice and it was a quart to little according to the dipstick. Nowhere in my town carries 0w20 PUP, so I had to borough the FILs Colorado to drive to work the next day. The Wallyworld by work carries 0w20 PUP.

Mine requires 6 quarts for some reason.
