I do all my own oil changes and buy the 5 quart jugs so pretty foolproof for me. What would the long term consequences be from overfilling the oil by only one quart? Unlike you, I am not a mechanic, so I am having trouble thinking of anything catastrophic.
Overfilling creates aeration which reduces lubrication.

as well as cause blow by/excessive crank case pressure but who knows if a quart is enough...be interesting to know what the limit was.

I learned early on that my dealership was completely incapable of doing an oil change when I had my Nissan Titan. Once they never tightened my skid plate and it fell off, once they didn’t change the filter, once they over filled it and the last one I was charged for and it never got done at all. Now the only reason to take my vehicle to a dealership is if it needs an electrical diagnostic test. I managed to keep my JK out of the service department for 14 years until the gauge cluster malfunctioned and I couldn’t diagnose it myself. A free dealership oil change is complete dog💩

I did my first two free oil changes with the dealer on my ‘25 Rubicon X. Today I changed it myself for the first time and 6 damn quarts came out! The manual clearly states 5 quarts so I called the dealer and the service advisor said “they put what it needs and the VIN lookup says 6 quarts”. She said every VIN is different. I called BS on it and she transferred me to the parts guy as a second validation. He looked up my VIN and said “nope, it definitely takes 5 quarts”. P.S. the oil pan bolt required me using an impact wrench to loosen! Had to be 80-100 ft/lbs! I’ll never take it in for something I can do myself. Unbelievable.
This is not surprising at all. The quality of even semi skilled workers in the U.S. has totally gone down the toilet in the past 5 yrs. Especially since the great P*andemic. 🤐
On the other hand before I was 16 my dad made sure I could do all of the basic service for a vehicle plus pulling hubs, changing & repacking bearings, dropping drive shafts & changing u-joints… etc, etc.

How many people help their children gain any mechanical skills & common knowledge that would be a great benefit in these type of jobs?

Meh, engines were simpler when they had road draft tubes that would solve any over fill issues on their own 👊🏼😉🍻

The engine took 6 until the PUG, and even then some like the GC still take 6.

Very easy mistake to make all things considered
Bruh... we are SEVEN YEARS into the JL Wrangler, not knowing it takes 5 qts IN BOTH standard engines is pure laziness at this point.

I had my free tire rotation done with my free oil change once. I asked the tech if he rotated the tires properly and he beamed and said "yep, I rotated them clockwise." he wasn't joking. Next time at the dealership I told the service manager I didn't want that kid touching my Jeep, he said no worries he is no longer here. He put a tire on a car and finger tightened the lugs, fortunately a senior tech drove it and noticed the wheel was wobbly. You get what you pay for...

Thank you for your reply. And I’m not meaning to be dismissive of anyone else replying. I am asking @alphawolff specifically based on his occupation since he could have first hand knowledge and experience as to whether or not one quart overfill, while not recommended, is really all that serious.

they're paid like minimum wage, be happy your drain plug gets tightened. the oil change guys are as green as they get. always change your own oil if you have the ability to do so.

quite literally nothing. if it's slightly overfilled it'll make it through the pcv and just go right back into the engine for combustion. as it's port injected it isn't a real issue.

the engine was designed for 6 qrts, they did some stuff with the oil pan for the PUG that reduced the capacity. it really isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. if you're at ~6.5+ or so you do run the risk of aeration which can reduce lubrication and cause seal leaks due to over pressurization of the crank case.

I think there was an engineer video that shows you need to add 4x as much oil to even do any damage to the engine, not that what they did was ok. And even then the performance dip but nothing horrible. But just food for thought. Since 2000 I have never paid anyone to change the oil in my car. I think I paid it once when I was a teenager and they over tighten the bolt. 350z, BMW, VW, Prius, Jeep. I currently have a EV but still when I get another jeep it's going to be DIY till I can't no mo.

I think about why I do stretching, yoga, weight lifting, is to be able to change my oil till I'm 100.haha

A friend of mine, Paul owns a small mechanic shop. His top notch mechanic resigned. He started the hiring process and gave a young man a try. His first task was a simple oil change. Paul saw thus said young man putting the oil plug back on with an impact gun. Paul picked that boy up by his buster browns and escorted him to the nearest door.

Yep, I started a thread on this way back when the JL first came out. Last I had seen, that thread had a ton of pages and was still going. FIVE quarts for the JL Wrangler due to a smaller oil pan.

I like it though. Means I can just grab a jug off the shelf at Walmart and a filter and that's all I need. No measuring or buying additional single quarts.

From the enggener comment floating around ofthen referenced when we talk oil. He stated the engine was tested and design to operate with +/- 1 QT of oil. Therefore 6 QT is not issue so is 4. Ya none of those number I want to test lol.
