Then remove the dipstick and with an etching tool, scratch a mark on the dipstick where the oil level is.

Now, whenever they want to see if their oil level is low, they can in the morning before using the JL/
JT, pull the dipstick and see if the oil level is at the etch mark.

I have found this approach is better then trying to read the JL/JT dipstick which is a really difficult one to read for most...

Yeah this is a 2018. Haha! Never heard of the etch marking method. But definitely the best way to check oil level is to wipe dry and let sit overnight.

He had already changed the oil and put in a new filter. Drained it again in front of me when I asked about the 6 qts. And then refllled with 5 exactly. When we looked at the dipstick after it had settled a few minutes, it came up a bit short. So when the 5 qts went back in, the filter was the one he had installed with the initial oil change that said six quarts on the invoice. So, it's a new filter.

This still sounds very odd. If it was refilled with 5qt exactly it should not come up short at all. Irregardless of new filter. If anything the filter already had oil in it. Strange.

Oh ... forgot to mention.... Very good pic you posted of the proper o-ring placement on the Oil filter housing cap, OEM Part# 68191350AA.

Oh ... forgot to mention.... Very good pic of proper o-ring placement on the Oil filter housing cap, OEM Part# 68191350AA.

Yeah always lube that new O-ring that comes with the filter in the box. Also the filter plastic tip has another smaller O-ring that needs lube. As important - do not overtighten when re-installing the plastic cartridge as it can snap the housing.

Same with the drain nut. Do not over tighten that bolt. Just torque to spec. Spec is plenty tight.

The pic below is from a lady friend’s car. The previous techs must have slammed using an impact wrench and rounded the corners out. Complete incompetence! Always do yourself if you are able!

Geeez, we could teach an oil change class... 8-) I'll add this:

A little reminder for all and IMPORTANT INFO, for the guy/gal doing their 1st oil change using one of these cartridge filters..

When you remove the old cartridge filter ... DO pull it straight down away from the oil filler cap.
Do not bend it sideways when you remove it!

IF you remove it incorrectly and bend and pull, you can actually break the valve inside the oil filler cap.

What I usually tell / relay to new JL/JT owner's is when they do their own oil change the first time that they should add 5 quarts exactly and then let the vehicle sit for say 10 minutes.

I tell them to then, remove the dipstick, wipe it off and then re-insert it.

Then remove the dipstick and with an etching tool, scratch a mark on the dipstick where the oil level is.

You left out the critical step of running the engine for a few minutes after a fresh filter and oil fill to allow the oil to saturate the filter. Then wait 10 mins or so for it all to settle out and check the dipstick.

How much oil do you think it takes to saturate a new filter?

A few ml.. So, to me not a "critical step".

going by weight a saturated mopar filter holds about 2 ounces of oil...

On the 2.0L engines it's a standard filter which holds almost half a qt. You do you but the reality is if you want to be thorough running the engine is needed.

Understood. Regardless of filter running the vehicle to get an accurate reading is pretty fundamental in most circles.

I agree even tho I know that when I put a 5 quart jug of PUP in it will be at the top of the dipstick line I still run it for 10 minutes and shut it off and let it sit 5 or 10 minutes and check even tho it never ever changes ....old habits...

I was talking 3.6 and cartridge filter. Approx. 2 ml to saturate cartridge.

I should have specified 3.6 in my comment. 2.0 is a different story.
