103 degrees out -- top back on?

Do you put your top back on and run the A/C when it gets really hot?

Saw the weather report yesterday morning and we are back to 100+ temps up here in the greater Sacramento area. I was heading to a lake to do some bass fishing and took the time to put the top back on before I left. Just couldn't stand the thought of sitting at the stop lights on the way out of town with it so hot out.
5AM and I decide to pop the Freedom Top for my 40 minute commute into DC. In my work out gear (shorts and T-shirt) do I can get a run in. Temp was about 60-65. Mistake! Got real chilly at 55 mph so I turned on the heated seats and the heat.

Now, end of the day, temps in the mid 90ies with typical DC humidity. Shirt and tie, sitting in traffic trying to escape downtown. On comes the AC. Silly? Probably, but it worked for me. Live and learn. 100 degrees? Top on and a/c on blast!

It might be uncomfortable with top off in the heat, but it beats sitting on a bike in traffic sizzling like a corn dog any day!

Living out here, my awesome FZ-09 sits in the garage most of the summer. I used to commute by bike, but there are too many cellphone-drivers now. I swear I can't tell you how many times I've had to avoid distracted drivers. That and no matter how much mesh you have on, in 100+ temps in commute traffic, you are going to be hot as F. Not only do you get cooked by the sun, but you also get cooked by the radiator fans blowing hot air around you. And you show up to work all stinky. During the commute is not the time to be wearing half-assed gear.

Isn't fall (and early spring) to the best time to ride?

Top down is substandard Wrangler experience.

Premium experience is: doors and sides off, in Safari mode with premium soft top. You get nice wind and sun, and in 100+ temps last weekend was pretty nice for going on a 3 hour drive in country

Speaking of sunshades I really wish one of them had a upf rating.

A t shirt has a UPF of about 5. So most of these I think are lulling people into a false sense of security when it comes to skin cancer.

If/when I get my Jeep I will dual top or skyonetouch so I can run safari mode or close the top to keep the sun off me.
I’ve thought of that, too. I wear what I call my dork hat (full brim hiking hat by OR) when the solid top is down. The spiderweb shade makes it more comfortable, but you’re still getting sun. I also have sunscreen in my office and glove box. Gotta be safe.

I call mine the old man hat (Tilley LTM6) because every time I wear mine my wife always points out the 55+ crowd with the same hat. Mine is OD green though

My rule of thumb is above 95 I run a/c; 95 or below I will open up the top and run the windows down (alien sunshade up front).

I have this hat and love it.

But, I did just turn 50.

I was safari mode all weekend, no doors no side windows. Love it. I use safari mode a lot more than anticipated, really helps keep the heat from beating down on you.

I usually run no A/C with doors/top off just because I hate listening to the fan noise.

The other thing is, 90-95+ is one thing in shorts and a t-shirt, it's quite another in work clothes (jeans or dress pants, undershirt, polo or dress shirt). No thanks.

Doc... Duh.

1. I’m a doctor who works at a cancer center so I see a lot of sad melanoma cases.
2. I’m pale. Like really really pale.
3. I work nights so I rarely see the sun and when I do it lets me know I have zero defense against it. I fry in minutes.
4. Lots of skin cancer in my family.

When I do have to go into the sun it’s usually long shirt and pants that are both UPF 50 rated. I have a giant LL Bean hat.

I loathe sunscreen as the only thing that works for me is zinc. Lots and lots of zinc. Which means everything I touch has white smears on it and my beard looks like I dipped my face in flour. Lol.

I like driving windows down and sunroof open. But I have a long sleeve UPF 50 to protect the arms and only open the sunroof if the sun isn’t on me or I have a hat.

Since I’m considering a hardtop then a UPF sunshade would be amazing. Would live to see someone make layers of mesh to let the air pass through but keep the sun 100% out. I think best option is dual top and safari the soft top.

I mostly just wish they earned people that these tops afford little to no protection from UV.

It was 107 today - as soon as the spring rain stops, off comes the top. Granted, I had to have a malignant skin cancer removed from my arm this week. I’ve always been a “top down” kind of guy.- I guess that’s the price. Wouldn’t change it

George: as you probably realize, sunshades provide some UV protection although I haven't seen any rated.

Arguably you could buy 2 identical ones, line up their grommets and install them. I'd have to think they'd provide more protection than 1 or none.

What about something equivalent to a white sheet as a "mesh top" that's translucent and lets air in, but blocks light on the UV spectrum? It's not perfect, but better than your exposure with little genetic propensity to produce melanomic protection.
