This month is the 6th anniversary of the first Wrangler EcoDiesel deliveries. When the MOAB was announced, I definitely toyed with the idea of moving on—I’ve never kept a vehicle this long.

And sure, nothing is as intoxicating as the lumpy idle of a big V8. But there’s something almost otherworldly about the EcoDiesel’s two standout traits that usually don’t coexist: massive low-end pulling power and excellent fuel mileage.

I was an early buyer of the GC 5.7 Hemi, and while I’ll admit I haven’t driven a Wrangler 6.4 Hemi, I’m confident I’d love it. That said, there’s also something about the diesel’s loud, throaty clatter that scratches a similar itch—maybe not quite as much as a Hemi’s rumble, but close enough to keep things interesting.

For now, I’m all-in on the EcoDiesel. Anyone else feeling the itch?

I was waiting to text drive a diesel when the V8 rumors started. Got the V8, torque and hp, no recalls or problems other than one self created. Yep - the mileage sux in town, but not so bad hwy (14-16). Old muscle car/muscle Jeep guy dee-lighted with his jack of both trades Jeep.

Been there and lived through the HPFP recall with my Gladiator. No thanks.

No itch here at all. Loving the diesel, it’s been everything I’ve wanted out of a diesel wrangler!

The 6.4L crosses my mind every now and then but I really do love the diesel. Usually a V8 jeep crosses my mind when I start thinking about what the diesel is going to be like way down the road as far as reliability and parts availability. We are at 53k miles on our ecodiesel and still love it. It tows through the Rockies great, the mpg's are good, and the torque is awesome. Getting ready to head to winter 4x4 jamboree next week and play in the rocks with it!

No itch here. I constantly use my Jeep for long trips. Longest one day trip was 17 hours from Moab to South Texas. So, the added range is a big plus for me.

The last trip I had to Big Bend, my gaser friends had to make three extra fuel stops that didn't. It was on a holiday weekend and every pump we stopped at was a mad house with people trying to get fuel.. They were constantly worrying about fuel and my friend with the JK even had to use one of his fuel cans to get back into town. That was one thing I never worried about.

Love my diesel but right now it's at the dealers with a CEL for a fuel pressure sensor. The estimate, including diagnosis is just over $2,000 and I'm not sure they're replacing the right sensor. The code is for fuel pressure at the filter and the dealer is saying it's a bad connection at the fuel rail. Anyway, I'm waiting for a call to pick it up and get my stage 2 delete done.

I've got an F-150 for long trips, which is the greatest road trip vehicle ever and I'll fight someone who says otherwise ;). So for me, no need for something that is good on a road trip, because no offense the Wrangler is a horrible vehicle to drive long distance. Cramped, bad seats, bad steering, little storage, etc. I've driven my old one from Georgia to Montana and actually sold it in Montana, I wasn't willing to drive it back.

So fuel economy isn't a big concern to me.

I wanted a 392, but I wasn't willing to spend 100k on one.

Now that the Moab is out, and you can order one for $7k off. It is extremely tempting. I'll have to see what my '25s trade in value is in the spring or summer.

Do you pull your Jeep with your F150 on those trips so you can off road when you get there or are you just talking about road trips in general that don't require a Jeep at your destination? Most of the the road trips I do actually require a Jeep once you get there. I can pull mine with my 2500, but that brings its own extra set of obstacles especially if we are camping. If I am not doing a road trip that requires the Jeep, then I just drive my 2500 diesel for more room or 328d diesel if I am more concerned about fuel mileage since that gets 45+ mpg.

I had no problem doing 17 hours(1,100 miles) in the Wrangler. It was comfortable for me, but I understand that everyone is different on what comfortable is. My half ton friends think their Jeeps are too stiff, but having driven HD trucks for the past 20 year, the Jeep is nothing.

This is a good question. The Moab is the first 4 door I’ve considered as a “reasonable” upgrade to our diesel (Sahara, not Rubi). We’ll stick with the diesel for now. It’s been a really good rig for us with the way we use it. I also have zero concerns about its long term performance.

I still wish they would’ve put a diesel in a 2 door or a V8. I like my 2 door (‘25 XR) but I’m not impressed with either engine option. I believe the only two great engine options were the diesel and the 392.

no itch here.
can’t beat the torque and range of the diesel.

maybe if’s because of the way some people are setting theirs up, but i find mine comfortable enough; 16-hour drives after a week of wheeling 2 states away? no problem. can’t think of a better vehicle for that!

the V8s are just too short-range for me.

I have never towed my Jeep, but I could. I do tow my track car, so that time eats into any road trip I'd do with the Jeep.
