True. I guess I just don't see myself coming onto a public forum to ask what vehicle to buy. It is too expensive and personal a decision.

But I can see people new to Wranglers going onto Jeep.com and their heads exploding when they see a dozen different variants to choose from, before they even get to select number of doors, color, top, motor, transmission, and individual options.

You need to focus on two main things;

first, what is your budget and will that budget hold for the entirety of your financing period?

second, as many have said, what do you plan on doing with it? Most people who know they are going to modify it a whole lot get the sport. Others, like myself, who know they will rarely modify the vehicle, with the exception of slightly bigger tires, decided to go with the rubi because they like the looks and the better stock capabilities. Again, this decision is to be made after you have already decided what your budget is and how much you are capable of paying for the vehicle.

For example, if you plan on getting a sport and doing a whole bunch of modifications on it, consider the cost of all those modifications and add it to the base price of the stock Sport and decide whether that final price is worth it for the level of capabilities you will end up with after the mods are installed.

Then you can begin the process of comparison.
For example, one of your comparison cases will be: if the total cost of the Sport + all the mods you want is going to be more than a stock rubi but is going to be less capable, you can choose to get the rubi instead and save yourself the trouble. But if it will be more capable and the price works for you, then you can get the sport and mod it. You can play with this for as long as you want with different levels of hypothetical modifications.

But remember, this is all based on how you think you will use the Jeep throughout its life with you.

My 2011 JK Sport was purchased due to what I could afford and light off roading. I also got a smoking good deal. Ordering a Rubicon this time around the beginning of the year. Over the years I got bit hard by the off road bug craving more and more difficult terrain. It will still be my daily driver but this is why I’m going with the Rubicon with my future purchase. Less time doing mods and more time having fun. As many others have said just evaluate what’s best for you.

All good replies but I would say answer this question first.

1. Can you afford the Rubicon. If the answer is yes then just get the Rubicon. You will then never regret your choice.
+1

i would not mind having willys [as a second option if i cant afford a rubicon] they look awesome as well.

Do NOT buy a Rubicon if you don't 100% expect to actually use most of what it comes with. 10-15k more is not worth it for a few stickers and higher ride height. A lot of the people on this forum with Rubicons never use what they were made for. Some will even admit they don't. And some end up traded back in very quickly or asking for lease takeover.

If money just grows in your backyard, though, then yea go for it lol

Not going to tell you what to buy but I will tell you what influenced my decision to land on a Rubicon. As others mentioned, first and foremost is price you can afford. The next largest factor is what I intended to use it for (not into crawling but overlanding... drifting more than anything like in Fast and Furious  ). Next, I evaluated what options I wanted from factory and what I knew I could do afterwards; this also plays into your plans (based on intended use) on what you may switch out later. After that, I evaluated what the best deal I could get based on the local inventory around me. When all was said and done, I got a better deal on the Rubicon rather than a Sahara or Sport.

Good luck with your search and purchase, you cannot go wrong with either trim.

Spoken like a true NON-Rubicon owner. Bravo. Yep that's what you get for $15K, stickers and a taller ride height.

Read @Jeep4Win and there you go. That's why you should get a Rubi if the budget allows. As I stated earlier, as long as the budget can afford it you will always wish you did get the Rubi.

It is not just if you can or cannot afford. I mean if you cant afford it the answer is easy. But I would find it rare that you could afford a willys or sahara and not a rubicon. Unless you buy the most basic sport model a wrangler isnt necessary cheap and financing an extra 10k should be easy, and if it isnt maybe people are buying too much of a vehicle, but hey your finances your choice.

Now if you can truly save 15k, that is a considerable amount of money seriously, 15k on a sport will get you beyond rubi. The other thing to think about is warranty and time, effort with installs. Also, if you were to save 15k think about all the things you could spend it on outside upgrades. Like if you want a RTT, camper, roof rack, dual top, etc...

Think about it carefully. It is not "if you cam afford it buy it". I do not regret buying my sport, I have learned so much with it doing upgrades and I saved a ton shit of money and I am building my dream offroad squaredrop camper. It is a lot of fun customizing it and I feel a lot more attached to it. Yes I have sweat and spent many hours learning and installing things, lots of swearing. I could have easily afford a rubi, I bought my sport outright cash. And I made the right choice for me

It is up to you and there are a lot of things to consider.

Everyone read he was going diesel correct?

Diesel sport gets m210 and m220 standard width 3.73 gears

Diesel rubi gets m210 and m220 wide (1.5 inch) and 3.73 gears.

Transfer case, lockers, swaybar, fenders, red dash, and offroad mode is what he gains.

OP needs to decide if he wants aftermarket lockers and if he's going to swap out any of the rubi stuff anyway might as well go sport.

don't ask what the Jeep can do for you but ask what you can do for the Jeep , if you start with sport you can built yourself a very specialised machine that will do exactly what your driving needs are for probably less than rubicon but on the other hand you can drive completely stock sport and you will feel just fine trust me

I am a “non-rubicon owner” and guess what I can do any trail a rubicon can no problems. I spent a total of 5k on my upgrades and I like my sports look better than a rubicon. Its people like you that give the jeep community a bad name because unless you have a rubicon it’s can’t do anything. More people buy rubicon’s that have them washed and waxed every week and never see dirt.

So I bought a Rubicon because I didn't have all the up front money for all of the upgrades I knew I would be getting anyway...... I also wanted to 4 wheel ASAP .... some things I knew I Wanted were the axles 4 wd the gear ratio LED lighting was a must have for me as well as the towing option and stereo.... and the list goes on.... But.... I bought mine used... it only had 485 miles on it and I had to drive 9 hours 1 way to get it but I could not pass up on the deal.... What really matters is what you want to do and how often you want to do it and if you have the money to pay someone to do it for you or if you are going to do everything yourself..... a lot of probabilities to consider..... best of luck....
