New Jeep owners, 2018 Wrangler Unlimited, trying to decide what size tires and wheels would look good and not rub without a lift, and if we decide to do a 2” lift what would you recommend?

Nice Jeep!

Welcome to the forum.

The biggest you can fit without a lift is 285/70R17 --i.e., Rubicon takeoffs.

With a 2-inch lift, you can fit up to 35x12.5 tires, but you will need new wheels and to regear.

The most I'd recommend anyone who doesn't intend to regear is 285/75R17 (34x11.5).

Good luck.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
Here's a Rubicon suspension install thread, it's affordable, uses factory parts and will allow you to run 33" tires without a problem on the trails. You can find these sets in the member marketplace here in the $100-200 range typically. You may be able to find someone selling the wheel/tires from a Rubicon at the same time, so you could just do a one stop shop :)
Welcome to the site btw!

If you go w/o a lift, 33s will be your max size. They fill the wheel wells nicely and look good.
If you do even mild offroad they will rub.
From my experience: Rubicon takeoffs with rubicon suspension is a cheapest upgrade and looks 10x better than stock sport. 35 and even 34 will rub even with rubicon suspension. 34 don’t rub with 2” lift and high fenders.

In 4 days of wheeling Moab, I didn't experience any rubbing. And that was over several Badge of Honor trails.

Love the color. dont know why.

Plus one on Rubicon suspension. i have it and it adds a touch of flare. also, if you use focebook market 'might' be able to find cheaper 287/70/17 tire wheel combos that will have some use and be way way cheaper than new tires.

Yeah I haven't gone on any heavy off road stuff yet, but I just installed the rubi KO2s and it hasn't rubbed on light trails/full lock, etc

Interesting. I guess each jeep is different. I had some rubbing on fender liners on Moab trails with rubicon wheels and rubicon suspension with 1" spacers up front. With 315 KO2's I had minor rubbing on fenders with 2" spacer lift, 2" bump stops, wider Rubi axles, +10 offset wheels and diesel rubicon springs. And Rubicon supposedly fits 35" with no lift.
Front wheel lightly touches the top part of the fender in this picture.

I thought about it more and realized that rubbing is a function of a bump stop and if it does not rub (minor rub in my case) with Rubi shocks and springs, it will not rub with stock sport suspension.

Welcome to the forum. I have a 2" Dynatrac Enduroport lift with BFG KO2 315/70/17 on a '21 Sport Altitude. No need to regear at all. Anything above 35" you will definitely need to regear. Plenty of folks out there running 35s on Sport models without doing so. Best part about owning a Wrangler is you get to max out your credit cards on all sorts of mods. Enjoy!

Welcome to the world of Jeep. Please do yourself a huge favor and Drive your Jeep the way YOU are going to be driving it Before you jump into any “lifts/big tire things”. YOUR Jeep is far more capable than most people realize. A set of 285’s (Rubicon take offs) or similar will give you the grip you may need and will look good. There are trade-offs for any mods you may make. Find what You need/like Before you spend your $$. You can thank me later?
