What winch do you have?

Some YouTube influencer needs to do winch test were they pull under load for for a three or four full line pulls under load. Like 400 or 500 feet.

There were places in Alaska where we hooked up and pulled from tree to tree to get across swamps and what not.

Sounds like you did this. What winches were on the jeeps?

Anyone have experience with the mile marker winches? I’ve been eyeballing one for my Willy’s. I had a smitty bilt on my old trailboss and had good luck with it but I’ve heard of mile marker for years. I won’t buy another warn because I’m not sold on the premium price vs performance. Our last warn winch lasted 4 years and the internal drum rusted together. Now I have no clue how that would’ve happened as the winch was used maybe 4 times to winch out our truck at our deerlease. It was not on a hard core wheeler that stayed covered in mud and water.

After the 10 month old, no pulls, only respooled twice Warn Zeon Platinum (The most US made) brake failed I went with Comeup in ‘22.

The Warn still sits here in the garage waiting for spare money to order the part the Warn tech suspects it is. Costs too much to ship to a facility, pay for the repair, etc and then there is still the remote. The ones that dies, no manual backup. Expensive Warn-only replacement batteries. Guess you can keep it plugged in to get things going, hopefully. Really just a big paperweight. I bought it new in a stapled, undisturbed box from a local guy who went with the RC version Warn instead so I thought I saved a few hundred. lol Nope!

Anyway, I’m running the Seal Slim 9.5 RS.
Both a wireless and backup plugin cable controller.
IP68 rated.
Just under 63 lbs.
Over 48ft/min line speed w/no load.
Fits in tight mounting areas.
Mid priced.

Sample of one winch of any given brand is data but not conclusive data, Like most reviews, the reviewer is not a scientist without personal bias. Human nature is to defend our choices of products because we don’t like thinking we are wrong. So things devolve into comments like cheap Chinese junk or overpriced ripoff. Winch discussions seem to get emotional pretty quickly.

I love a good conversation about winches. I knew the day I bought a badland it wasn't the best, it was a crap shoot. IMO, to anyone getting emotional, if we all had the same winch there wouldn't be a conversation, nothing to talk about. Let me give you an example. Despite people pointing and laughing at my little, skinny tires (which I find myself laughing along with them similar to John Candy and Steve Martin laughing when their car caught on fire) are a great conversation starter. If we all had the same tires, nothing to talk about.

The guy testing was sourcing for a company that sells vehicles to customers that are big on brand recognition. They were going to get Warn winches regardless of what the tests showed. Likely 99% of the customers will never touch the winch, and many will not even know what it's for, just that it was part of whatever package they bought. 2.6 years later it will be turned in to the dealer without the line ever having been pulled out.

Any winch is way better than no winch, as long as it works.

Good point.
I have used mine several times, especially for shrubs, stumps, a fence post, one jeep recovery on the trail. I absolutely love having a winch on my jeep.

The problem with most cheaper winches is that they eventually fail without you being able to predict it. It's not like it's as simple as a dirty contact so you hit the button the first time. It's that the contact vaporized because it's made out of drill press shavings. Sometimes the first time you go to use them.

Many cheap winches don't take well to not being kept in a climate controlled environment free of dust and moisture.

I'd rather have something that is slow or irritating to use than one that doesn't work. By the time I get out the winch line, I'm desperate. I've had so many problems with my HF winches that when I take my car hauler to get something I take a backup.

A lot of the cheaper winches clearly sacrifice that dependability by cutting corners for the bean counters to save money.

There are tons of places that have been making winches for decades at this point. If their shit is known to fail, there is no reason to be buying from them whether they're made in the USA or in Tawain or China proper. If you stare at the winches long enough, you can figure out who copied who and who makes all the same winches that look like it.

There is nothing difficult about designing a planetary gear winch that is reliable. The hard part is doing it so it can be sold at a tolerable price point.

There are some oddballs in the inexpensive winch arena like carbonoffroadusa that seem to be a little bit different.

A huge company that makes money across many different fronts like Harder Fraught should be able to sell a winch at a loss and still make money selling ancillary at a profit. So the fact that they choose to sell a winch that fails so regularly means they don't actually care about their brand perception.

Oil, Octane, T-4 vs V6, manual vs…. anyway - I had an old no fault Warn on my 63, it rescued me a couple times but mostly used for tree, clearing etc work, followed by winch assisted steering in deep snow. The JL has a selectable front locker, PU can do the clearing, so why lug around the weight ? I found the solution, very cheap, no wiring, lightweight, gives the “look”, but on back order.

Northridge has a good sense of humor too
