Question regarding Warn winch when ordering.

If there is a problem with the winch while under warranty, who covers the cost of the return shipping?
The warranty says :
Return the Product, transportation charges prepaid, to the Warn Industries Service Department at 12900 SE Capps Rd., Clackamas, Oregon 97015. OR Find the nearest Warn Authorized Service Center by visiting: www.warn.com/corporate/authservicecenters.shtml.

That's what I thought. I really wish I had Warn dealer in my area. I always wanted to try out a Warn winch.

Nearest service center to VA looks like Wrightsville PA.

I was just looking at that. 4 hour drive one way. Return Shipping/freight average, $100.

(If there's a problem) I get it.

I believe at one time Warn winches were 100% made in the USA. They're not anymore. Nevertheless, how much would you pay for a winch made 100% in the USA?

I would pay 3 times the cost ($1200) I paid for my Badland winch ($400). Maybe even $1500 if the reputation & warranty was remarkable.

Edit: I think that's reasonable.

I have a Warn Evo 10S on my 2018 and a Warn Zeon 12S on my 2019.
I’ve owned the Zeon from new and it’s been flawless.
The Evo, I bought used from a buddy after he had it repaired by Warn….since then it’s needed a new controller (bought the same one used on the Zeon which has worked great) and now just clicks when trying to use. I’ve tried a new control module/relay to no avail so now have a new motor for it (will have to make time to replace it soon).

The Evo’s used to be cheap but now, are close to what I paid for the Zeon so it’s worth fixing it.

I have the Warn VR EVO 10S because I don't want to get stuck out in the boonies without any help and I don't buy cheap shit and I don't buy from Amazon or Harbor Freight. I prefer to buy only top notch products.

Because I read a few horror stories on this Forum whereas the cheap shit failed and self-engaged which caused a lot of damage and fires so I decide to install a 500 amp battery cut-off switch for the just in case event.

There's a British outfit selling under the Warrior Winch brand. Seems like they are sourced off shore as well.

Next up on the mods list is a winch

Narrowed it down to the HF Badlands 12k synthetic winch as I don't hardcore wheel but saw some posts saying it's big and heavy especially for the 2 doors

Anyone thoughts on the badlands winch? Better alternatives at similar price point?

Question regarding Warn winch when ordering.

If there is a problem with the winch while under warranty, who covers the cost of the return shipping?
Way, way, way back in the day, 1988 to be precise, I installed a Warn M8000 winch on a 1980 CJ5 I had at the time. The motor burned up while trying to tension the rope on the drum. At that time, I just took the winch back to the Off-Road store I had bought it from (On & Off Road Haus on 21st south in Salt Lake City) and they sent it back to Warn for repairs. It came back about 10 days later and there was a handwritten note included with the winch that said, "Next time be sure to hook the leads up correctly". Cost for repairs was $0. When I reinstalled the winch, I took extra time to check that the wiring was correct, and sure enough, I had had the wiring hooked up backwards the first time.

The only other troubles I have had with winches in the time since I started 4-wheeling include a '97 TJ that was badly turtled on a big rock in the middle of the little sluice on the Rubicon Trail. It was a Ramsey 9000 lb winch and it actually broke clean in half while trying to pull my TJ free. Another Ramsey 9000 lb winch failed in the Tank Trap portion of 4-Wheeler Magazine's Top Truck Challenge, also on that '97 TJ. And finally, I had an unknown brand Chinese winch burn up while trying to pull a 1500 lb UTV up on to a trailer to take the disabled UTV to a dealership for repairs. The winch had been installed by the dealership prior to sale, and although it was rated at 2500 lbs, it could not pull 1500 lbs rolling up a gradual ramp. All other winches have been Warn and have been trouble free.

I have Warn Zeon 10 S Platinum winches on two JKUs, and they have been rock solid for nearly ten years. We actually had to use one a couple of weeks ago, and it was just as reliable as it has always been.

I still have the same complaints now as I did when I installed them years ago. The remotes use micro USB charging ports, and they do not seem to hold a charge for very long.

That said, I am currently looking at winches for my JL and will probably go this route again. I really like that the clutch is fully remote controlled, the remote is wireless, and there is no app involved. I hate wired remotes, and using my phone as the alternative is a concern. If I drop my phone, I risk losing both winch control and my ability to call for help.

From what I can tell, the new "features" on the XD do not feel like meaningful upgrades that justify the higher price.

I have had multiple Warn winches over the years on multiple rigs. i have never had a problem with any of them except for my old 8274 which gave out. I took it to Warn Milwaukee, OR repair center. Not only did they find the problem which was a solenoid (that had gone bad after 30+ years of abuse from my father wheeling his CJ hard before handing me the keys) they replaced the solenoidfor free along noticing some wear on the gears which they also replaced, they cleaned up the entire winch and basically handed me back a completely rebuilt winch that will last for another 30+ years all free of charge.

I also appreciate Warn because they give back to the off road community and more specifically they support and donate money fighting to keep trails open.

harbor freight does not support any off road programs.
The owner of harbor freight has never once donated to tread lightly, blue ribbon coalition, or any other off road programs.

According to Tread lightly and Blue Ribbon coalition Warn is always one of their largest annual donators and trail program contributors.

The Owner of harbor freight donated money to a politician who recommended selling public lands to private interest. That is not what I want my money supporting.

The director of engineering at Jeep said it best when asked why they chose Warn as a factory option for the wrangler: Warn is an American brand that builds and assembles the factory installed Warn winch in the USA just like the Jeep Wrangler. Warn has the same values as Jeep and has been a long time supporter of the Jeep community.
Totally agree! I had a 8274 on both my '75 Ford and '79 Chevy trucks. Bomb proof!

My Dad was a commercial loan officer at a Seattle bank. I remember meeting Mr. Warn in Eastern Washington in the '60's, Mr. Warn gave us ride in Jeep Wagoneer, demonstrating hubs and the winch to my Dad; presumably to help get a business loan. Good memories!

Smittybilt. Had some good first-hand, in-person recs based on real world usage
Same - Hard to beat the H2O line. I had one on my JK, and bought it again for my JL one I traded it in. The single remote that can operate wired or wirelessly is the best in the market. Warn is so far behind the times its not even funny. Winch motors are pretty much bullet proof now. It is all about how compact and, line speed and the electronic controls.

Smittybilt H2O has been flawless across many dozens of recoveries from -20F to 100F.
