This can be answered with words but the "feeling" is where it's at. Get in a car and drive yourself into a ditch.....try to get out. The "Oh Shit" feeling will hit you. The panic and worry of how the hell your getting out of the ditch....who do you have to call, how much does it cost to get out, if you have kids how are you going to go pick them up?

Now...go down the same road and get stuck in the same ditch in a Jeep. Try getting out.....you'll soon feel the "Oh Shit" feeling and then drive out of the ditch..."Oh shit" feeling is now gone.

Please feel free to replace the ditch in the above scenario with mud hole, swamp, lake, river, ocean. Whatever you prefer.

I'm a brand new Jeep owner and I can't wait for my first trail. Someone asked me a question as a newbie I feel that I am ill-equipped to answer so please help me.

The question - "So you are going to drive 60 miles on perfectly paved roads to go off-road for 7 miles in a muddy area with no real scenic view of sorts. Why would you do that and spend hours cleaning your vehicle afterwards?"

For people who went on their 1st offroading trip, what got you hooked?

In all seriousness....

its a lot of fun! My first jeep and my first trail and I want to do it every Saturday now. I went with my good friend, his daughter (15) and my future brother in law (14). We had a lot of fun as a family. Even though I had no clue how to 4x4 (I still dont), through the help of my fellow Jeepers here, I picked up pretty easily and then I was able to let the kids take a test drive and taught them how to shift from 2H to 4H.

They, myself had a blast! We went through limerock rocks, clay pits, some ATV circuits, deep sugar sand, large puddles, etc etc. It was neat to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

Makes total sense. I have never really explored GA but have done hiking and backpacking in numerous touristy locations. Hope to explore and learn about my own backyard. Thank you.
I didnt see you were in GA.

Last year, pre-jeep, I visited a town called Ellijay. AWESOME little town and lots of neat little places to explore! Im dying to go back and take my Jeep. Im betting I would find a lot of fun places that I couldnt with the Highlander I was in.

Why all the pictures? Because they show a better story than I ever could with just words.

What does it feel like? You'll see beauty, even if you aren't anticipating it. You'll often meet some amazing groups of people, and spending time doing things with them will make the adventure that much more memorable. Finally, you'll do some things that you didn't realize you could do, or that your Jeep could do, and you'll have both an adrenaline rush, as well as a sense of satisfaction from doing those things.

My added bonus is that my family enjoys it, and it's something we all look forward to.

IMHO their description of what you're doing is inaccurate. For starters, I love the woods, so the area is far from having "no real scenic view". They may be right that you're not on a beach with a sunset or a mountain top overlooking a valley of autumn leaves. Although to be fair the Jeep can absolutely take you to both of those places. Even though every ride isn't to that view, the woods, or even a rock canyon for those out west, can be just as beautiful.
I do agree that the clean up after fording a mud hole isn't worth it to me anymore. I've done in trucks, and I'm still willing to ride with a friend who wants to do it in their vehicle. To me it's too much effort now. But there is a pretty big rush of endorphins when you're able to drive out of that mud hole, when you think you'll surely get stuck. As others have said, there's also the camaraderie of the Wrangler family which is strengthened when you off-road with friends.

So the feeling you're asking about.
Esprit de corps, excitement and euphoria.

Ellijay is less than an hour north of me.
Lots of places to go in Georgia,/North Carolina/Tennessee. Sadly, much less than we used to have access to 20 years ago.

Some of the roads less traveled are fantastic.
Capital Reef: 8.5 hours of just me and my wife. We saw five folks on Duel Sport Motorcycles no one else.
Leadfield Nevada was a super nice ride. The Ghost town was super interesting.
The lighthouse and mining tour around the Great Lakes was fun. All except one was connected by blacktop roads.
Here in Tennessee and the surrounding area there is more pressure on the trail system. More vehicle traffic. Unfortunately there are more butt heads going off the designated trails. However, law enforcement has trail cameras set up and very expensive fines are being issued. Hopefully the bad apples will get the idea bad behavior will not be tolerated.
The out of the way places we have seen have been real interesting. A day in the middle of nowhere without seeing anyone is super nice.

@chevymitchell asked us this question the last time we went off-road. Everyone had a different answer.

My thought is: Why get a Wrangler if you’re not going to go off-roading?
Lol, because my wife has wanted a Jeep since watching Daisy Duke 30+ years ago.

I grew up off-roading beat-up stock 4x4 trucks and old Jeeps in the late 70s / early 80s. Now I off-road with my kids on our motorcycles or in a side by side. It's too expensive for me to tear the fenders off of a $35k+ Jeep.
