Topsy Lift thread

I purchased a torque wrench to make sure the bolts didn’t get over tightened. 1 of 4 still snapped. On the good side the parts guy at the dealer in Richardson (a suburb of Dallas) had 12 bolts at the warehouse and a new one cost me $0.82 (I think he said it was a 6mm bolt). Anyway, thanks for tip to use the smallest easy out. #1 worked great.

I snapped off one of the 1/4” lag bolts attaching the frame to my garage ceiling. I didn’t feel like I was cranking on it that hard! I’m going to upgrade to spax 1/4” / 3” lag screws from HD.

For the snapped off lag lag bolt, I’m just going to leave in the joist and drill a new hole near it.

Ordered Topsy kit with Racor lift yesterday. Seems like the best solution for me and super easy to get hardtop on & off. I also like the fact I can store the softtop and accessories on the platform when my hardtop is on my jeep in the winter. This dual functionality made it easier to spend the extra $$ vs the Harken Hoist I was originally looking to purchase. Now I just need my 2019 Jeep to get delivered.

Just installed mine this morning. Soft top and all accessories fit perfect.

It’s snowing / raining in chicago and I can’t image getting the hardtop off until spring. But, I installed my RAcor lift today. Took some time to try to get square and find the ceiling rafters

2 mods made to mine:
1. Topsy metal replacement plates thanks to @Shots ... Great to have the extra strength/security.
2. I swapped out the horrible(!!) RAcor lag bolts (one snapped off) with spax powerlags ... huge improvement.

I finnaly got a buddy over to help me get the lift installed. Works great, just needs to cool off so I can switch to the soft top. We tried 3 stud finders but the magnetic one was what finally did the trick.

I have two of the replacement plates from Topsy for free after I paid for a set. I'm in Phoenix is anyone wants them.

Does anyone just use the hing hoist as and simply connect them to a screw eye in the ceiling joist with a tie down strap? Just make the straps a bit shorter than distance to top and lift each corner of the hard top onto them? Seems simplest and most secure without worrying about plastic gears...

^also, those posts about snapping bolts makes me a little concerned, even with the use of a torque wrench? 10nm isn't too much, I have one for use on bike components that I can use but still...

That was worded a bit difficult, but if I understand what you're saying correctly it should work. It sounds like your idea is to put 4 eye bolts in the ceiling, attach straps to the eye bolts which would connect to the Topsy brackets. Simply lift the corners up a bit (one at a time) to hang the hardtop and drive out from under it.
Sound right? If so I see no reason why that wouldn't work as along as you adjust the straps to the correct length. Should be solid as can be.

I use the Topsy brackets with 4 eye bolts in the ceiling of my garage. 3 ratchet straps (one for each rear corner plus one looped through the front) to lift the top. Easy, takes me about 30 minutes to do the top and doors by myself. Just have to be careful and go slow when lowering it back on by releasing the straps a little bit each while keeping one hand under the top to keep it from free falling.
