I’ve been very happy with the 7 inch uconnect.

it’s better than the new Sync in my wife’s Lincoln.

I also second the heated seats.

and the Alpine system.

it may seem like too much money, but you will get your use out of it driving every day.

IMO, YMMV

I ordered mine with the 5' and have no regrets. Between bluetooth and a backup camera that's all I need. The 5' satisfies that and saved $1000. I didn't order heated seats either, but that has more to do with the heater being very powerful than saving money(Jeeps get warm real quick.)

Welcome and glad you’ve asked this question here! We are here to help you!

So, I was in a similar boat, trying to cut costs (because I simply wanted to lol) and ended up doing the 5.3”.

I was able to snag a 7” head unit down the line for around $600 at the dealerships parts dept from what I remember and all has been well and all functions work perfectly. This puts you well below the 1k mark and avoids those things you don’t need/want.

The install was literally plug & play. My 7 year old daughter could’ve done it, literally. Also, because I got it through my dealership it’s covered under my bumper to bumper warranty. Can’t beat that!

So, that is an option if you get tired of the 5.3”.

Hope this helps!

Cost you a lot more than $1000 when you regret your decision about 2 months down the road and decide to upgrade it yourself. Always option out to the max from factory. These options literally cost pennies compared to the headache you’ll run into down the road.
Trust me.
So I totally understand where you’re coming from in a general sense but in the case of the head unit upgrade I don’t find that accurate (see above). It was honestly really easy and much cheaper.

To your point though, and although it wasn’t terrible, if I did it all over again I would have gotten the tow package.. Now that’s money well spent. I did however learn a lot during my DIY install (If I can do it anyone can) but I’d rather not have to bend over backwards for 2 hours in some tight spaces ever again LOL

So, again I do see and half way agree with you. Just depends on what it is you’re opting out of; a know before ya go type of thing on some things.

also, get the manual transmission and it almost pays for the rest of that stuff, lol.
True. But man the auto trans is probably the best mechanical thing on the JL. And Ive always had manuals.

Currently looking at building a 2020 Sport S (need auto locks for kids) and trying to find ways to keep my price down. I don't need heated seats and questioning if I really need to add the technology package for $1000. I know it comes with V4 Turbo but I really want the V6 because its been around a lot longer and doesn't use premium gas, which evens out the loss in gas mileage in my opinion.

Anyways I think the 5" screen would be enough if I didn't get the technology package. The thing I would miss most is that I couldn't plug my phone in to listen to podcasts.

Any suggestions on this?
I thought the same as you until I saw the 7" and the dash. Made it look very modern unlike the 5".

I’m glad you like it.

I love the manual in my JLU and will never go back to automatic or a turbo engine again.

The 2.0L turbo is perfectly happy on 87 octane regular gas. Jeep even clarified that regular is perfectly fine for the 2.0L.

You are all forgetting the tech package is not just about the 7in uconnect. It also has the larger screen on the dashboard with the offroad option as well as the auto temp control which is very very nice. Those options together are definitely worth $1000

Yes, it's worth the $1,000 (or $20/month on a payment...)

Heated seats i could flip/flop on (I got them, but I'm Canadian, an even though I live in SoCal,...I'm Canadian - we do not buy cars without this option!).

Tow package - no brainer for me as it adds an important upgrade: 240 amp alternator.

Now, leather seats - skipped those. Unless they are ventilated with fans (like my RAM was), I just sweat more in them.

I didn’t forget about them, those are things I don’t need. If he’s on a budget really the screen is the main draw to the tech package for most which again can be accomplished for less and easily.

I’ve seen Sportsguy sweat and it’s just nasty. Now he’s getting heated cloth seats, which means he’ll still sweat, but the stench will soak into the cloth unlike the leather, where it could be wiped down. Thank goodness he’s buying the four door so I can sit downwind when I visit. And note to self- bring my own towel....

Yes you are right.
I didn’t know replacing the head unit was that simple. I read that a lot of issues people run into upgrading to 8.4
Doesn’t the 7” package also upgrade the instrument panel too?

You have the option as it is an additional part and requires a flash so if you wanted to you could to that in stages, however, I have not done the instrument panel as it is something I do not need in addition to what I have.

Yeah the 8.4” is easy as well but the issues become what trim level you’re doing it on.

For example if you’re doing it on a base Sport the Off-Road pages won’t work as well as a few others. So you will have inert options which I think is annoying and the reason I just did the 7” lol

As another member stated though, it’s probably next to nothing per month so why not right? I’m just a DIY guy at heart and saved a little, very little per month in the grand scheme.
