So...I was at WalMart and remembered that I was down to 1/4 tank of DEF. Since I've always bought BlueDEF at WalMart I strolled down to the automotive section. I went up/down the aisles looking for the familar box until I gave up and asked a store woker. She looked it up on her handheld device and led me to a dark blue container - SuperTech DEF $8.88 for 2.5 gallons. It was right next to an empty section that once held their now sold-out stock of BlueDEF. I pondered a moment and then went across the street to HomeDepot and bought BlueDEF for roughly two-times the price ($16.28).

Has anyone taken the plunge into the world of offbrand DEF?

I bought some cheap AF def at Atwoods (basically a knockoff Tractor Supply). If I remember correctly it was around $6.50 for 2.5 gallons. There was no fancy box stating what it was. The funnel was in a cheap plastic wrap that was just jammed into the hand hold. Got it right after the new year and no ill effects. Hell it was in my Jeep when we got only into the 20's during the day and no dash lights came on.

I usually like pump def, but it doesn't come out to as cheap as Atwoods. But, my wife was at Brookshires next door and I got the warning light while on the way home from a road trip.

I almost always run the Peak Blue DEF. I used some DEF from a Farm store once and no issues. I was on a road trip last winter in my F-350 and the only place I could get DEF was a Walmart in a small town in North Idaho. All they had was the house brand. After that usage was the first and last time I got any codes related to DEF. I ran some DEF cleaner and have been back to the Peak Blue. I did run some Platinum as well. Could be coincidence for sure, but I won't run it again. I know there are tons of people out there that put whatever in and have no issues.

The basic formula for all DEF is 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water.

DEF Platinum includes an additive to minimize crystallization of the DEF (you see the crystals clearly at many "DEF at the pump" stations).

DEF does have a shelf life (some say 6 months, some say longer).

So any product/brand that defines itself as DEF should be good for use in our Jeeps.

With that said, gasoline is gasoline too, but refiners have different additive packages - is Chevron as good as 7-11 gas? Maybe, maybe not. But unlike DEF, the price difference between Chevron and 7-11 fuel is not 2x to 3x as it is with cheap DEF vs expensive DEF, so I chalk it up mostly to fancy marketing, especially if you are using the DEF within 6 months.

Funny you say this. I was in Walmart just the other day picking up some shop towels and saw a display in the aisle selling Super Tech DEF for the same price. I did the math in my head real quick and realized it comes out to about 0.35 cents more per gallon then I'm currently paying for DEF at Buc-ee's.

Plus those jugs are such a hassle to use. When they're not leaking and dumping crystallizing crap everywhere, they take forever to get 2.5 gallons into your vehicle.

At Buc-ee's I'm getting it from the pump, so less mess, significantly faster, and it's quite a bit cheaper. It's actually the cheapest I found around. I can't seem to find anyone that will beat it. $3.15 for a gallon of DEF from Buc-ee's is a hard price to beat it seems.

If I could find DEF for a $2 a gallon, I would probably take the chance. Especially at the rate my EcoDiesel eats up DEF. 1 gallon every 600 mi is a bit excessive. But that's what you get for raw power with a stage 1 tune!

I ran SuperTech in my 2015 Power stroke the entire time I had it with no issues. SuperTech is API certified, use with confidence:

I have run Supertech in all my diesels since 2010 and have never had a problem. Having said that, I was putting on 40-50k miles a year on my vehicle so the DEF was getting refilled regularly. Now that I’m only putting only 10k a year on a vehicle, I may go with the Platinum to prevent crystallization

I had almost the same experience at wally world. Led me to the super tech and I've been using it since in both my jeep and motorhome. I've been a bit hesitant since my def head went on my MH a year ago (faithfully used blue def and still got de-rated and a 2k expense ). I think I'll continue to take my chances with the 'cheap' stuff.
***BTW*** cheap handheld transfer pump from harbor freight works great for def containers.

If any of y’all have a Rural King nearby, go check out their automotive products.

Although I buy all of my DEF at the pump for my 2022 RAM 5500 Cab & Chassis (it also has a 9 gallon tank)…..I thought this was a great deal on DEF.

It's cow piss...I get it at Trac Supply for $6.99 for 2.5 gal. Two years, 15,000 miles so far.
