Been looking at a Rubicon X w/ a sot top. Question for the owners: if you parking inside (my garage) can you just leave the top open or are you supposed to close it?
Also, did you install the hotheads SOT headliner? I was looking at one today (AZ - 108 degrees), man those cross bars get hot?

Thanks

It will be sticking up a bit when open, do you have the clearance ?

I don’t have a hothead, but suspect it will make the folds stick up more.

Thanks

Yes, I've got an 8 foot garage door. That should not be an issue.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't leave it open. I put the hothead liner on and it does wonders for heat reflection. It also helps with the acoustics for the radio. It doesn't reduce road noise appreciably.

I always close mine in the garage, open as soon I pull it out (weather permitting).

Habit from the 2010 Camaro convertible I had. The top would learn the open position during hot weather and show the crease/fold areas on close.

I have left my SOT open for months without closing it. I got lucky and didn’t get caught in any rain. It was not a problem at all. I also have the Hotheads headliner installed. As others have said, it is great for deflecting heat. I also added the Hotheads mesh cover. It works under the headliner and SOT. My family loves it when stuck in traffic or at red lights in the summer. It is easy to see through and helps with wind and sun. It is also easy to remove when you just want open air.

If you get the Alpine radio, don’t forget to bump the top closed an inch to keep the closed rood sound profile. The roof open profile is too hollow sounding for many of us.

Good luck!

I could leave mine open, but I close mine to try and keep bugs and dust out. It's so easy to open and close, there's no reason not to. I have the Hothead liner, and it helps with insulation from hot and cold the most. Similarly to the hard top liners, sound reduction seems minimal.

I used to leave mine open in the garage but now it kisses the door when going in so I close it. But I leave it open as much as I can.
Also have the Hotheads liner. It does more for heat than noise.

I guess you could leave it open, but why wouldn't you close it? It's one push of a button! It will keep your interior from getting dirty/dusty (and have you ever had a bird get stuck in your garage?). I have the hotheads headliner and love it. It helps with the road noise and makes the stereo sound even better! Not sure about the heat as I live in Ohio and it doesn't get that hot here but the way it is built I have to believe it has an insulating effect. It looks like it was factory made for the Jeep. No regrets on spending the money.

if SOT is already open, I leave it open when parking in the garage....thinking less wear & tear on the mechanicals. Will typically leave it open weeks at a time if it is not raining.

That makes sense for where you live I guess. Weather is too unpredictable in Ohio so I don't open the top every time I drive. Also, I live on a farm so it's kind of dusty here with a gravel drive, several dogs, cattle, and tractors out doing what tractors do. 🚜

I leave mine open in the garage all the time. Outside it depends on the weather, but it can lead to molten hot leather seats☀🔥🥵

I have the hothead liner which I purchased 3 years after owning the Jeep. I wish I had purchased it sooner. It provides a nice drop in noise and you can feel the difference in the summer and winter when it comes to temperature.

There's one significant reason to leave it open in the garage. They have moving parts and motors that wear out. Like anything relatively delicate and mechanical, there's a limited number of times you can use it before it breaks. It'll cost ~$1.5k to ~$4.k if that failure isn't covered by your warranty.

Ours cost $1.5k to initially fix. The dealership "fixed" it, but it was much worse when we got it back. They basically had to replace the whole thing and wanted to charge an additional $3k. It took lots and lots of emails (so everything was recorded) to finally get them to cave and pay for it themselves.

Was it just the motor that failed? How many years of use did you get from it before it failed?
