ya know all things considered that’s a lot less damage than I would assume for your jeep taking a nap.

I also have the usual skid plate damage but this cross member takes the most beating, and you can see some damage to the rear mount to the front LCA there too

And I think all my wheels have some rock rash but this ones the worst.

Heads up to you lurkers out there... If after reading these accounts you still buy a used Jeep, you deserve whatever misfortune comes your way.
Just gotta crawl on the ground and look for damage.

Or just buy ones with angry grills, a line of ducks on the dash, 20" wheels and the hand wave sticker on the mirror those usually just end up at the malls.

let's just say it usually isn't hard to tell the Rock Crawlers from the Mall Princesses.

i hate damaging anything irresponsibly, but bought/built my J**p to go places and do things. that said, i like them to stay looking nice, and working well. so far, so good!
Desert Pinstriping is a given in my experience, but that's a big reason why my current J**p is not a dark color, and why i didn't want painted flares.
i also knew i was going to drag it going over stuff, so that's why it quickly got a full belly pan, rock sliders, etc. those are expected and acceptable points of (gentle, hopefully!) contact.
so far, no damage to the wheels themselves on this one (only to the beadlock rings, which is expected), but looking at the old J**p, it's just a matter of time.

it's all part of the game. but admittedly, people buy J**ps for different reasons, and have different games; that's part of the beauty of J**ps.

I was recently lamenting my first repair on my 2022 JLU Sahara (new driver in household, new right fender), and I started thinking about the Jeep owners who actually take their Jeeps off road (there have to be some who still do this, right?). I have to assume that this results in some self-inflicted damage, but is that correct? How often do the off-road crowd damage their own rides just having fun?

Ah yes, self-inflicted Jeep damage is almost a right of passage. ?

I had a bit of desert pin striping and scraped skids, diffs, and slightly bent rear LCA/shock mounts with about 2,000 miles on the odometer from my first Texas off-road adventure. Definitely stung a little.

After that, I’ve added a severely bent ear/wing/whatever on my hitch, lots of bumper scraps, tons of factory skid dents and some tears to the thinner metal, dents to the frame side LCA mounts (can’t seem to find skids for these), and a pretty scraped up front passenger fender flare and side marker light.

Paint has a few more pin stripes, some deeper than others, but overall she still looks great and passes the 10ft test. ?

I turned a pickup, which was only a few months old, on its side. We were way up high in the mountains of Montana on a camping/wheeling trip. We got it out, it wasn't pretty. I remember pounding the rockers flat with a huge rock just so I could get the driver's door to open and close right so I could drive it 500 miles back home. Truck still smelled new inside.

After that, I had Jeeps. Dings, dents, and scrapes here and there from various trips. I got away lucky on my last trip to Moab. Brand new Jeep. Came off a shelf pretty hard but landed on the trailer hitch and tore the rubber cover off. I also banged pretty hard on the gas tank skid. No big deal, came home, sanded down the spot and hit it with some rattle black so it won't rust.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
If you hit that exhaust loop hard enough it is going to ruin your day ...

Put a skid on that thing and bonus points for tying it back into your engine/trans skid, like so:
(Note: Picture is on my JK, but it is the same general arrangement. I added the parts outlined in orange. It has held up very well.)

Just got my 24' Rubi X two weeks ago. I've been installing skids and better rails and all the protection I can first so that WHEN it gets damaged on the trail I can say to myself "well I prepared as best I could" and not feel as bad.

If you're going to play, you're going to pay.

My rear bumper is currently dislodged on the right side from dropping off one of the hundreds of large steps up on Gold Bar Rim in Moab. I have a new aftermarket rear bumper in the rafters of the garage, just no time to install it right now. The sides of my JLUR are pinstriped deeply from trees and brush. My wheel rims are skuffed and gouged from rocks on all 5 wheels. One front fender is deeply scuffed from rocks in "the squeeze" on Pinyon Mountain trail. I could go on, but you get the point. Off roading in any vehicle beats it up, whether its a jeep or any other vehicle. For those that are careless, one trip can end in a totaled jeep.
