Im not guessing. I actually did this. Repeatedly. Perhaps there’s something wrong with my Jeep?
@Wabujitsu

My guess is you had your driver's seat belt fastened.

Read/learn about auto park and then come back and post what you found out as to why you thought auto park was not working...

Ah-ha! That’s probably it - the seatbelt. Thanks!

@Wabujitsu

If you had come back and said your seat belt was indeed unfastened and auto park was not kicking in, I would have told you if you were keep light brake pedal pressure on then that also would keep auto park from kicking in.

Good copy. I did it only because I was curious after reading a similar thread here. I otherwise don’t purposely back up with my door open. If i cannot maneuver safely due to an obstructed view, I get a spotter.

Is Auto Park the result of Anton Yelchin's death?

I was reading Brake Hold is in the Tazer beta. I was wondering how it could be safely pulled off but I think Auto Park would take over if you forgot the car was in drive.

After crushing my foot like that all those years I still cringe at the idea of moving with the door open. OMG, that hurt!

If you were rolling at greater than 1.2 mph and opened the door, it would not go to auto park until speed decreased.

I tried to back up with my wife's 2019 Cherokee in a parking lot and discovered, immediately, that it couldn't be done with the driver's door open.

My mother in law did back up with the driver's door open while in her garage years ago. The garage won, the door lost.

I used to open the driver's door when backing up long distances like a driveway. Can't do that in my Wrangler now but with the back-up camera it wouldn't be necessary.

Only opened the door once while backing up in my CJ 5 though. Ended up with a face full of mud when trying to get unstuck.
?

I wouldn't disable this function, even if I could. I can't think of any benefit backing up with the door open could provide.

I’m sure @Rhinebeck01 will disagree. ?
From the Owner Manual:

WARNING!
If vehicle speed is above 1.2 mph (1.9 km/h), the transmission will default to NEUTRAL until the vehicle speed drops below 1.2 mph (1.9 km/h). A vehicle left in the NEUTRAL position can roll. As an added precaution, always apply the parking brake when exiting the vehicle.

The purpose of my post was only friendly teasing of @Rhinebeck01; I’m NOT disagreeing with anyone here. In fact, I appreciate learning the info presented.

I have heard you can purchase a seatbelt extender on Amazon and plug it into the locking end and you are good to go.
