Here's a pretty good recording of the noise from my jeep. Chrysler, are you really going to tell me this is normal??
That's what my rattle sound like, except mine lasts a little longer.

Does anyone know what the long term implications of this are for the engine? Obviously it can't be good. But if the engine is going to eventually need major work/replacement then I think I'll be selling my Wrangler before my warranty expires. Which sucks, I was hoping to keep it for a long time but I don't want to deal with the costs of an engine replacement.

I've been hearing this sound for a while now, and decided to search our forum. Sure enough, I come across this and other threads. Wow... so it's either "normal", or preignition/knock that FCA needs to revise a tune for. Sounds like better octane gas will solve this? I just filled my tank up with 87. SML. :( I'll try to go 91 or 93 once this is empty.

@JeepCares - you've been ignoring the posts that specifically state or mention going back to FCA and issuing a TSB or recall on all this. Are you going to ignore my statement too? Let me guess, you're going to quote my reply, and say something about "send us a direct message and we'll escalate it for you" type of response? Give me a break.
That last paragraph, nailed it!

Listen @ 11/12 seconds! My ear is so trained by now.
Pinging with destroy the engine. I have experienced this first hand on another vehicle but in that instance it longed under load. It lasted a week of those symptoms and then blew the engine. Because this is light load low rpm i think its not as bad but still damaging. Itā€™s pretty easy, the service techs just need to record the knock sensor output to know if itā€™s pinging for sure. However when I asked them to do this they come up with some bullshit why they donā€™t need to every time. They either donā€™t have the tools to diagnose it properly or Theyā€™re just going along with the FCA denial. How many miles has as every one with this country condition got on their JL? I am at 22,000klm (roughly 14k miles?) been doing it since new.

I have 3,000 miles and have the same noise. 2020 JL 6spd. Iā€™ve shifted as shown in the manual as well as at 3k or more RPMs with the same results. I have not tried 91 or 93 fuel yet. Havenā€™t gone to my dealer yet but seems like a waste of time other than getting a paper trail going in case of damage in the future.

update: I ran Sunoco 91 for a week now and it has helped but hasnā€™t eliminated the noise. Definitely isnā€™t something ā€œlooseā€ underneath.

I have 33,000 miles now. As of now I'm not using oil or anything yet. If I start noticing it using oil or something it will be traded very quickly.

In every instances the dealer has failed to resolve the issue. @ Jeep Careā€™s, you need to do more and push Star cases. All weā€™ve seen is empty hand holding and then poor cover up excuses from the dealers.

Hello, I am not very familiar with this forum and I donā€™t know the role of JeepCares with Jeep Dealers, but this is my story of the problem. I bought a year ago a 2019 Jeep Wrangler Sport 3.6v JL automatic transmission, since I bought it, I listened an engine rattling noise (not sure if this is the right term), it is when accelerating from 17 to 30 mph, flat ground and regular street, not off-road or anything special. I just use 91 octane fuel. I took it to the dealer due to it is under warranty (right now it has 22k miles), they said it is normal. I will take it again to other dealer, I am not a mechanic or anything close, but to me that is not normal on any vehicle, specially on a jeep with amazing reputation of a strong vehicle. Any similar experiemcenor advice? Thanks

@JeepCares - where thereā€™s smoke, thereā€™s fire. also, where thereā€™s clearly an engine defect with the factory design, thereā€™s typically a class action lawsuit.

Hi folks! This is my first post, although I've watched these threads for a while, owning a 2019 JLUR that has pinged no matter which gas I've run in it. Mine's a 6MT, and just scheduled the clutch recall (mainly because my clutch master just started leaking all over the firewall, harrumph), and I mentioned when scheduling that I was having pinging issues. The dealership (Faricy in CO Springs) actually called back to tell me "oh, you're running 91 octane? That's the problem! We have a document to show you about that, you should only be running 87". This sounds odd to me, since my pinging started when I was just running 87, and looking through these threads I don't remember seeing anyone get "run lower octane" advice from a dealer.

Either way I'll see if I can scan a copy of the document after getting the vehicle back from them.

LOL I wish that was the problem. I only have the problem running 87 and only ran 93 in the first place because of the pinging...

Glad I found this tread, read the whole thing and I'd like to add my issue. It seems that this thread may be acknowledging two separate issues, mine follows.

I have a 19' JLUR 3.6 8AT.

At approx. 8,000 miles (currently at 10,000) I noticed a rattle while accelerating in 3rd gear, however I only noticed this when I was driving on a surface street with a wall on one side and vehicles parked on the other, windows down or doors off. With windows up it is hard to hear, but I still can.

This made me pay attention to the sound, over the last month I've analyzed the operating conditions that cause it and I'm able to replicate it anytime, as long as I'm at operating temp. My issue only appears to happen in 3rd gear (I suppose it could be happening in higher gears, but by that time the road noise/wind interferes too much to tell) It definitely does not occur in 1st or 2nd gear, yet.

My JL sounds just like the video in post #43 by BriBerk (page 3) under low RPM acceleration in 3rd gear it sounds like nuts and washers shaking around in a metal coffee cup for about 1-2 seconds then disappears. I'm convinced it is related to the transmission in some way but don't know how.

Morning and evening commutes are short (3 mi) and the jeep never gets up to temp, all is quiet and well. But on weekend trips to the trails, as soon as coolant and oil are over 200, trans around 180, that's when the rattling begins.

I've checked everything, anything that can rattle doesn't, nothing is loose under the jeep, everything torqued to spec. At this point I think going to the dealer would be for documentation only, as they seem unable or unwilling to address this.

Any stock in the sound coming from the transmission? or should I be looking into the motor as the source?

Hey man, I agree it sounds like transmission noise but your description matches my issue more or less to a T. As I'm sure you've read, many of us (including the service manager at my dealer lol) believe the issue to be related to a lean PCM tune. Try 91/93 octane and let us know what happens.
