My dealer informed me that the results of the star case are as follows:
- the vehicle is operating as designed
- I should shift at higher shift points (lmao, are they just reading this forum?)
- I should use premium gas

I truly can't fathom how it is "operating as designed" and also "should use premium gas."

Meanwhile, my @JeepCares representative is completely useless. I haven't been able to get through once, and when I go to the main operator, I hear the same "case manager was told by the dealer the issue is resolved, "operating as designed.""

Here's a pretty good recording of the noise from my jeep. Chrysler, are you really going to tell me this is normal??

Same response and myself and others. I have the auto as was told it’s as designed, use premium although I only run premium. To me this really adds weight to the theory that the real reason they won’t fix it is because of issues with EPA around revising the engine tune. FCA probably worked out that the pinging in most cases won’t grenade the engine during the warranty period. If only tuners had free access to the JL ecu they could fix the crappy at cruise tune.

Hi guys, after hitting the trails for 2x days I can confirm I only get the detonation in the high 90’s deg c and higher. I was also using octane booster with 98 Ron (Shell). The octane boost does help suppress the detonation in my case but does not stop it.

To answer someone else’s question regarding octane difference between US and Aust, from my research it looks like Aust 98 is equivalent to US 93.

While in the outback I got up early one morning and attempted to crudely bleed the cooling by parking the JL nose up a mountain and waited for the thermostat to open but after 15min of idling the right side of the radiator was still cold (89 deg c showing on the gauge). Ambient temps outside were 10 deg. I need to spend more time on this one.

To avoid the orchestra of knocks under the bonnet i used low range to reduce torque needed for certain obstacles where typically it would easily do it in H4 :(
This amount of detonation can’t be good for the engine.

I believe E85 would be ideal for this situation but I don’t know enough about this fuel system yet or factory ecu tuning capability. I am so use to Jap cars.

I will find a solution for this problem (other than a LS swap hahaha) and from my research and disappointing finds I would be super surprised if Jeep stepped up to the plate with support even though the fix would be as easy as a tuning map revise/upload during a routine service.

I’ll keep going with it.

Keep at it! I hope we get to a solution. I too have taken note of engine oil temp and my pinging happens around 100c and up. 10% e85 starved of 90% of the detonation for me. If you come across a tune with the software to tune the JL ecu please share.

mine just started rattling the last month. I belive it's due to offroad runs. In my opinion it's not engine but something like heat shield vibrating. Also tried hitting items lightly with hammer. See photo.....this seems to be loud and possibly rattle???

There are definitely Instances in some cars that rattle due to a heat sheild. In my case it is engine tune and pinging. The car also studders like a hiccup when it happens.

Recommend reading the thread... we wish it was as simple as heat shield rattle but that shouldn’t go away with octane and worsen with temperature.

that’s the end of the flag nut for the upper control arm. That won’t rattle if your upper control arm bolt/s are tight.

I crawled under today. I took a whole 45 min to touch everything that sounds like a tin roof rattling... i even checked deive shafts, muffler items, etc...

Long shot, check the front lower air dam guard. Mine collects rocks and they can rattle around. Otherwise I can’t think of anything that would be an obvious culprit.

It sounds like a tin rattle.... heat shield, muffler shield.... not plastic.
