Anyone else experience this?

I was on my way to work the other day on a rural 2-lane highway with a 55mph speed limit. Sunny day with no wind and ideal conditions.

I had my radar cruise control set at 60mph and came upon a slower vehicle going 58mph.

My vehicle worked as expected and maintained a safe distance and matched the other vehicle's speed. I was behind them for about two miles and was distracted by the media display and trying to find a station.

For some reason, the distance between me and the vehicle ahead had increased quite a bit, and I was alerted to this by my Jeep suddenly taking off and rapidly accelerating to over 70mph.

I paused and observed what was going on. The vehicle ahead was about 200yds in front of me. My Jeep seemed to have just stopped maintaining speed and distance with it, and then suddenly realized it was lagging behind, so suddenly accelerated to correct the distance.

I tapped the brakes when the speed hit about 75mph and the distance between me and the other vehicle hadn't quite closed to within the radar distance settings.

So I have no idea if it just would have continued accelerating until impact, or if it would have maintained radar distance.

I any case, the vehicle should not have exceeded the 60mph setting and the sudden acceleration to 20mph over the speed limit was very disconcerting.

I need to visit the dealer for a media center issue and normal oil change, and will mention this event, but I'm sure they will have no solution or input as far as the rapid acceleration is concerned.

I'm curious as to if anyone else has had this happen.

Not normal and one of the reasons why I don’t use it or the emergency braking anymore.
Nothing like incorporating a feature to encourage the driver to not pay attention to what's going on around him/her

my 2024 jlur does that all the time when using the adaptive cruise control..if say my adaptive cruise is set at 65mph and come up on a vehicle traveling slightly slower my vehicle will slow down like it should but if the vehicle ahead decides to speed up suddenly and it accelerates ahead my vehicle will accelerate to match it's speed not stopping at the 65mph it is set at..it is like it wants to stay with the vehicle ahead for some reason. it does it all the time and not sure how fast it would accelerate too if I didn't tap the brake pedal to slow it back down.

Not sure about Jeep mine is a 18 so not as fancy lol. The Mercedes Sprinter does have this option, it will follow the vehicle infront but there is a setting that allows it to speed up X amount above the set cruise speed. Again not sure if that is a setting for Jeep but worth looking into.

Seriously? I'm wondering how that would be useful. You typically set the speed and intend it to be a max. Yes, it'll slightly exceed that when cresting a hill, but not intentionally.

My 2024 JLUR FE has done that to me twice. I only have 1,000 miles on it, so I haven't used the cruise control much. The first time it did it, it scared the crap out of me. The second time was when I stopped using adaptive cruise control.

Yep it is either on / off or basically flow of traffic. I figured it was a European thing...
