2021 Jeep Wrangler 2-Door 80th Anniversary
Hey all, I have been trying to work this issue out for over a year (2021 JL Wrangler 80th Anniversary, 3.6L), and after my Jeep spending 10%+ of its life at the dealership, I’m consistently getting a “cannot replicate” response.

I am a naive, inexperienced and not even close to handy Canadian Jeep lover (this is my second Wrangler).

I gave up in 2021, but finally had it back in today for the same ‘rattle’, which is worse than ever.

The response was (once again) “noise not detected on test drive, rebook when condition is happening..”

I tweeted at @Jeep, @JeepCanada & @JeepCares (you may laugh at this video):

Since I am so naive, I just want someone to tell me “that noise is normal” - or “that’s not good”.
  1. JeepCares does not have anything to do with Canada, I pleaded with them for escalation/more help to no avail.
  2. I am directed to FCA Canada = Chrysler/Jeep etc, who actually “opened a case” for me in August 2021 (see Tweet for video & audio of noise) but:
    • Their motto is “no diagnosis, no problem”
      • Even after having my Wrangler at the dealership for 2 weeks once, and an additional week of combined days without it, the result is the same “cannot replicate, not detected” etc
    • Am I wrong to think: if the tuning is the problem, there would never be a code - since it thinks everything is okay as it chugs/rattles/suffers?
  3. Is this some kind of conspiracy? Or am I just a noob Jeep lover who’s too worried about a very normal noise?
  4. Someone please either give me peace of mind, or help me out here - thank you!!

As demonstrated in this thread, unfortunately, FCA does consider this a normal noise. The language in the owner's manual was clearly written to address this. I recommend using higher octane fuel or selling the vehicle... fighting FCA on this is not worth your time.

Exactly. Run higher octane, a fuel system cleaner, have a tuner retune it or sell it..pretty much your choices.

Just started getting the same noise, it mostly happens when in reverse and when moving from stopped. Kinda a bummer, if this is the way it should be it would be nice to have an official answer from @JeepCares - I mean, it's a brand new Jeep Willys, barely has 10k on it.

For reference I'm in Canada, only started seeing it since the summer hit. There was no issue during winter.
Hi there, vanzano. For support in Canada, call Jeep Cares Canada at 1-800-465-2001.

There is no fix. This is how the engine was designed to function. Running premium fuel might decrease the sound. Most of us have accepted it long ago and run regular 87 octane and have no other issues.

You can spend as much of your life at the dealership as you like, it (the sound)will still be there. As others suggested, selling It is probably the best option for those whofail To accept this outcome.

Is this going to get louder with time ?
No.. I'm at 43k miles now and tried going back to 85 octane when gas prices soared (still soaring where I live). The ping came right back. The engine just isn't tuned for 85 octane. When I run 87/91 consistently the pinging stops.

Thanks for the reply, that's an interesting point. I'm in Canada, so I'm running 87 by default and it pings during the summer. On winter it goes away. I guess I'll have to live with it.
I do find when I run 91 consistently it disappears completely after a few tanks. It is what it is....

My case manager basically said to run higher octane and inform them again if it worked before my next service at the dealer.

At this point they don't know what to do. If higher octane fixes it or not then maybe it narrows down what they need to address.
I ran high octane to eliminate it. Did nothing. Sounds like rocks in a can. Technician told me to keep driving it until it gets worse.
Great advice ….
it’s a known issue, but unfortunately, no technicians are able to solve it.
3rd gear around 1500-1700 rpm’s loud AF along retaining walls and concrete lane dividers.

This. Exactly same behaviour on mine. I mean, as long as this won't break anything or cause me problems, I'm ok with the noise. After all, Wranglers make all kind of noises once you start modding them.
Just sharing my experience. I don't know if its the exact same problem, but it started with the rattling noise, same as everyone else. I can hear it best around concrete barriers... more likely to hear it in 3rd or 4th.

Its been four months since the noises started. Its louder. Now, my Jeep (automatic, Sahara Unlimited 2018, 72,000 miles) shifts from 4th to 5th to 6th, down to 4th when accelerating. Still, I kept driving. I finally took it too the shop when the acceleration was delayed, started having rough idle, and low power when acelerating. The mechanic did some research and said he called 4 different dealers and Jeep knows about the issue but won't officially acknowledge it. I talked to a second mechanic shop owner, and he said its not just a Jeep issue, but a Chrysler issue with the 3.6 L engine that goes back over 15 years.

So here's where I'm at. #2 Cylinder Misfire. Don't know if the original noise is what caused the misfire, but I've never had an issue with anything until the original noise started. The mechanic has changed out the coil pack, and it still has not fixed the misfire (noise is gone). Could be BS, but I was told "the machines made a bad batch of cylinders, and usually they catch it around 15,000 miles, so the warranty fixes it, and Jeep doesn't have to recall or acknowledge".

Don't care what anyone says, that is not at all normal. Your Jeep is f$#@ed up. That is severe engine knock. It's not pinging. Expect your engine to fail fantastically.

Injector cleaner added when the tank is almost empty (temporarily?) cured mine. I'm sure it will come back but I can run low octane fuel right now with no pinging.

Just experienced this "rattling" the other day. Interesting enough, I recently switched to 89 octane from 87 octane to quiet down my ticking valve train. 2021 JLUR w/ 32k miles. Guess I will run some fuel system cleaner through it.

New TSB out on this for 'spark knock'. Symptoms are exactly this rattling I have and described by others. After testing fuel octanes across different stations, sometimes reduced rattling slightly but now it's back even louder. TSB calls for new PCV valve, plugs, head and valve cover gasket so far. Will report after mine is done.

Oh, so perhaps the factory installed plugs that were too 'hot'. That makes sense. I'd swap them myself but I think all the rest of that hours long work is needed to swap the plugs in this motor.

I know you have to remove the intake manifold at the least. I might just let them do it if its a TSB now. They can replace all the gaskets and check the oil filter adapter/cooler for leaks which is also an issue while in there.

If anyone cares to see what's involved. I had a friend who sold his 3.6 jeep some years ago because he wasn't ok with swapping the spark plugs himself and that was big deal to him
