From being a prior WRX owner, to moving into a ‘21 Willys Q3 last year, I loved how the Wrangler community also had a “wave” to fellow drivers (Jeep is better…and not just because I own one now).

I have passed countless Jeeps around town, but as of late, I am finding more and more don’t wave, and unfortunately, have even driven by some real “special” individuals who think that a residential street is a one lane road and more than likely being driven by someone who thinks they’re cooler than they really are ??‍♂. I am by no means generalizing this as ALL Jeep owners, but it sucks when you see another owner, get excited, throw up the wave and…nothing

Random rant I know, but what gives? Is throwin up a ‘Jeep hello’ really that hard?

ANYHOW…Happy Easter all! ? ?
Drove a few old Cherokees and Patriots around for years and never once received a 'Jeep wave' (until I had a Wrangler as a rental). When I got my Evo, almost everyone in a WRX (or STi) would wave, and our only commonality is a long-defunct manufacturer rivalry in rally racing going back into the 80s.

Think a large portion of people are just snobs or not really into cars. Happy Easter! ?

The other wave that's dying is the thank you wave. When I go out of my way to let people merge when others won't, all I expect is a quick wave or nod. A few manners go a long way in life.

While I can certainly appreciate your very valid point, this is an easy one to 'get wrong', for lack of a better phrase. In my experience, the merging party (to use your example) will often spend so much time making sure I see them waving that I often find myself yelling something like 'Don't wave, just #^$% go!!'

It needs to be one fluid motion.

A couple of thoughts on this. At least in my metro area (L.A.) I am assuming that 98% of the people driving Jeeps are completely unaware of Jeep culture and probably have never put their vehicles into 4HI let alone 4LO.

In the same vein as the previous comment, I see so many Jeeps on the streets in town that one could develop a repetitive injury with all the waving going on. It felt stupid in town so I stopped. On the trails, however...
And I am “just north” of you in the Bay Area

Meh. Whether it’s motorcycles, motorhomes, or Jeeps it’s just not important to me.

It has been my observation it has as much to do with where you are as anything else. People in rural areas generally are more ready to acknowledge others, while city folk are too busy just trying to stay alive in the scrum.

Agreed. Get over "the wave". Talk Jeeps in a parking lot, at club meet-ups, or wherever, but don't expect a wave from everyone on the other side of the road and don't get bent out of shape if you don't get one. I'd buy a beer for any Jeep owner and pick your brain about Jeep adventures or mods, but I don't "wave" unless someone waves at me. There are too many Jeeps out there now and it's stupid anyway. Just as dumb as the headlight flashes in the 70's and 80's between Mercedes drivers. If you get excited for a wave and then depressed or rant that you don't get one, that's your problem.

Down here in Northern FL...

On country roads it's often that everyone (Jeep or not) waves to each other. We all just assume everyone knows each other somehow, and if not there's nothing wrong with being friendly. You never know when you might need each other's help.

In the city it's hit or miss, but I do find that the more subtle the build, the more often the wave is returned. I.e. No squat, loud muffler/music, angry eyes, etc., etc.

There's a few rigs in town that have tall thin wheels and angry eyes that I don't bother waving at. But that's a conscious withholding with knowledge that's it's wasted due to more than a few confused looks (the drivers in those specific rigs are clueless).

For every other Jeep on the road a wave from me is basically muscle memory and automatic.

The point is don't run angry eyes. It impares your ability to wave ? ? ? ? Ok, that might not be right. I think the point is supposed to be don't drive your Jeep in the city.

Jeeps, Harley riders, and 911 owners are all traditional "wavers". Harley riders being, by far, the most likely to wave (down low style). Jeep waving is stymied by the shear volume of Wranglers you pass just getting a quart of milk. And...911 owners are concerned that they may wave to a Cayman/Boxster by mistake. :)

Wife and I were on our way to lunch after church today and I was waving at all the Jeeps and being annoying to her by saying, "what the heck!? No one is waving back!" Her response, "we're not in the Jeep." Well, I own a Jeep so I was still doing the Jeep wave.

I'm guessing people don't realize that most Miata people wave too, but typically only when the top is down.
