The only reason manufacturers are quickly going to 4 cylinders is because of the climate change nuts. Like the 8 cylinder is almost nonexistent, the 6 will follow and soon everyone will mandated to use electric scooters. Government control is a terrible thing.
I don't know of any government regulation that controls the number of cylinders in an internal combustion engine.

What sucks more do you think - the fact that its happening, or that you can see it coming for miles and no one bothers to do anything about it?
I am 100% with you. It is like nobody can think past today. It is amazing that most do not realize government control and regulations are not the answer. They simply live their lives and follow the herd, hopefully knowing full well, government agencies do not do anything effectively. If Jeep is around in 10 years, maybe it will be powered by solar.

BAH! In the good old days, we had an inline slant six that was indestructible. Forget HP…. It had torque! (Mopar, not Jeep)
I like my slant engines more hacked. The Pontiac Trophy 194 is half a V8.

Even more reliable than (human) shoes...
You Humans
You didn’t know the best off roader created, used for 1000’s of years. No fuel or electricity needed, just let me graze. The toughest trails are just a stroll but no trail needed, ask the pioneers or Mountain Men. Smokin chokin automobiles replaced us. No hard feelings, we helped you with the transition. 🐴

It isn't directly regulated like that but more implied. Under low load cruising scenarios the engine is rather efficient. Most of the EPA testing is done during cruise or at a stop. By creating a small turbo 4 cylinder you can effectively cheat that cruising emission requirement even when real world scenarios create a much different picture. The second you are required to go into boost the engine's fuel economy plummets. My 21 4xe got ~13 mpg going cross country, for example. It's also why stop start exits; the fuel it saves is almost inconsequential compared to significantly higher maintenance cost of reduced battery life. A good portion of the EPA city test is spent at idle, so creating an automated shut off system allowed them to effectively cheat that portion of the test.

It's the same reason vehicles are becoming bigger. The larger a vehicle is the less stringent MPG requirements they have to meet.

While I don't agree that emissions standards imply anything, I think that the key in your argument is small displacement. Not small cylinder count.
