If this were the 1960's, the title of this thread would elicit a much different discussion...BUT we're talking about axles today!

I am considering a trade of my '21 2-door Sport with LSD for a 2024 2-door Sport. Unfortunately, LSD is no longer an option, so I'm thinking that I might just keep my '21, which has zero issues and only 13K miles on the 3.6L. I do venture off road fairly often, usually overlanding/trails on flat and hilly desert, and often with loose gravel and sand. I don't always need the LSD, but it's nice to have when you need it. However, I've read that the stock LSD config on the JL is apparently prone to failure. As always, price is part of this equation too, and I might be able to get the '24 for my trade-in plus $10K. Given my use case, I'm leaning towards keeping my '21, but just curious what you all would do in this situation. Thanks in advance for your valuable opinions and happy Jeepin!

I have 82k mile on mine and the lsd is still going strong(knock on wood) with 35"s on for the last 50K. I don't overland but I do play on rocks and I would hate not having my lsd at times. I have seen a few rigs with open diffs that needed to pull rope to get up a trail where I was able to get through thanks to the lsd.

If you want to limited slip that bad get the new one and take it to a shop and have them put a nicer limited slip in than what you would get from the factory. Maybe ditch the 3.45 axle ratio for something a little better while you're at it.

Alternatively see if you can get into a Willys and get a rear selectable locker along with it

I would install a Truetrac in the rear axle (which is what I did).
This is another very good option but I believe you need a minimum of a 3.73 gear ratio for the true trac. I would do front and rear if I ever went this route.

Nope. The usual carrier break is 3.73 up, but the 3.45 gears in the JL are 'thin' gears to work with the stock carrier that is the 3.73 and up carrier. This is why you don't have to change carriers to regear >3.73. So the Truetrac will work just fine.

Good to know. Definitely will be my route when my lsd does go.

MK Ultra loved LSD.

LSD was my requirement in my 2023. If you do not need the 2025 why change something that work well especially if you go 2025 you will take it to shop and get the LSD installed.
At that point once the OEM fail get the aftermarket one and carry on.

13K miles, why not just keep what you have? For long term, you can always take out a MOPAR extended Warranty policy.
As for your LSD, JUST KEEP CLEAN GEAR OIL, WITH THE ADDITIVE IN IT, and you should be just fine.

This.

The JL axles have no carrier break. All ratios work with a single carrier. The JL axles have a much more narrow range of gear ratios to support (3.45-5.38) than the old Dana 44 (2.73-5.89). Those really tall ratios in the 44 need a huge pinion head which means you have to move the ring gear out quite a ways.

As far as swapping in a limited slip, I'd still go with shorter gears like 4.10 if I were going to all that trouble.

why would you be getting a new one just to get the same thing? for the new grill and radio? youre willing to spend $10k and lose your lsd? spend that $10k to make your jeep you already have, better. plus, your current jeep is problem free. getting a new one is a roll of the dice.

I would not do this. Trading your 21 for a 24 would cost you $10k, lose you an LSD, and gain you what? Wider infotainment screen, and maybe a different color choice you like better, are the only two potential gains I see. That's not worth $10k and an LSD to me at all.

I agree with these fellas. You have a problem free jeep with only 13k miles on it. Why not just keep it, save the money bro. Think about your next mod, set of tires or something.

Why would you trade? It seems you're considering trading your vehicle for one that is less capable and costs more.

If the 2024 interests you, I have a 2005 Ford Super Duty that I will trade you. It's far less capable, much too large, gets worse miles per gallon, but you can have it if you sweeten the deal with your JL plus $15k cash.

LOL...this is the feedback I thought I would receive, and it's right in line with my thoughts as well. If it matters, the main reason I was thinking about doing a trade-in, was because my warranty is just about up and I've been reading some scary stuff about 3.6L failures lately. In addition, now is a good time to get a decent deal on a JL, given the high inventory, and no idea if/when another opportunity will come along. TBH, I was about 80% certain I wouldn't go through with it, but just wanted to see if anyone had a different perspective with solid reasoning. Really appreciate it!
