I am not sure what kind of cow it came off, but I have leather seats etc. in my ‘19 Sahara and they are no where near as nice as the leather in my GMC Denali.

I think they have been using leatherette or some sort of synthetic blend leather for a long time…
You didn’t get the “Premium McKinley” option on your Sahara ? Too bad, it’s a traditional method of hand tanning only select premium skins in small batches, invented by Willard McKinley in 1917, you shouda’ checked the box.

Where's @OldJeeper when you need him!?
As many hides as he's skinned, he'd probably be able to tell us all of the specifics to look for.

You can always try the burn test!!

I think he's banned dude.

Since the 80s leather has been sealed. Earlier leather had a different feel and richer smell. To me every 10 years leather has been less and less leather like than of long ago.

Only expensive foreign cars have unprotected / unsealed leather. I admit the leather seats of 15 years ago had some smell, but even less so now in domestic cars.
I had one that smelled like sugar booger. 🤣

My build sheet says it's a leather wrapped steering wheel. Lol?
That's what my window sticker says as well. And I'm assuming "leather-wrapped" under options supersedes "premium-wrapped" in the standard equipment section, which I'm guessing is PU/pleather or maybe just rubber and hard plastic?

@LLRubylady , what's yours say?

Not all that crazy about the look and feel of the soft matte texture compared to the last leather steering wheel I had, but honestly don't care too much if it's real or fake, as long as it holds up to normal wear and doesn't look like complete shit a decade from now.

None... but it pays well.
To be honest... my 2019 leather wheel and shift knobs feel and wear like leather. Less cushion feel than most others I have had, but maybe because of the heated components, which are a first time experience for me. As long as the feel is there, complaints should be more from non leather optioned wheel users.

IMO I rather have cloth seats. I have noticed a lack of leather sounds when rustling in the driver's seat. all other leather seats I had made leather sounds more often than not.

Yeah, I really miss the sound when my farts squeak on heavy-duty vinyl, but to each their own. 😁

+1! for me the best combo is leather wheel and cloth seats. My f** a** gets too sweaty with the leather seats.

My 2006 has the leather steering wheel, but it does feel like it has an extra coating on it. It feels similar to the coating used for leather footwear. I used to make leathergoods so I'm familiar with the feel of both fake and real leather. When I test drove the 2024 it felt the same as my 2006, but I can't really be sure until I drive it more.

Is there a way to restore the leather steering wheel to its original look and feel?

The coating feel can be part of the sealing protection. My 2019 feels smooth like the 2009 Honda, both had been broke in from use. I do note the matte look will wear and become shiny in areas. One thing to note... I make used car purchases in the hight of down turns. 2009 Honda in end of 2010. 2019 Jeep summer of 2024. Each car comparatively to same newer generations with refresh, seem to have slightly more than what was currently released. Subtle good differences but real when you compare side by side. Leather was a talked issue and missing trim level add-ons. With any car manufacturer, supply and demand effects where and what changes are done that may effect quality, but is a substitute to lack of availability. Leather can be a box of chocolates when a manufacturers may not follow the original requirements set on the order. We get that with our production where I work. They look the same physically and do the same function, but not quite the same when in use. Fortunately our QC will not let it pass until rework corrects the issue, meaning pull and replace.

Use a good cleaner... I prefer Dawn, warm water and a rag to remove oily build up. Let dry and clean with an alcohol wipe and let dry. Use a matte leather sealent to restore the over all look. Once dryed it should feel smooth and not have the slick feel of before.
