Leatherette steering wheel? Seriously?

I am looking at 2024 Rubicon X and just noticed that the steering wheel is leatherette. Since when?
I had a 2018 Rubicon and as far as I remember the steering wheel was real leather.

I am not sure what kind of cow it came off, but I have leather seats etc. in my ‘19 Sahara and they are no where near as nice as the leather in my GMC Denali.

I think they have been using leatherette or some sort of synthetic blend leather for a long time…

Genuine Nauga lasts far longer than today's leather. Also has that unique smell of the 60s that today's leather pretty much has no smell, unless you spray scent in a can.

It just seems that they keep making changes to the wrangler and keep cutting things out. It really stinks.

depends on which brand/manufacturer, my 11 year old sports cars still has a strong leather smell as soon as you open the door.

Since the 80s leather has been sealed. Earlier leather had a different feel and richer smell. To me every 10 years leather has been less and less leather like than of long ago.

Only expensive foreign cars have unprotected / unsealed leather. I admit the leather seats of 15 years ago had some smell, but even less so now in domestic cars.

This is a trend across the industry, sadly. Even in my 2021, where the steering wheel is actually leather, there is minimal actual leather on the seats - only the insert panels are real. The rest is "leatherette" (vinyl). My 2021 Silverado actually has no leather whatsoever in the rear seat...only the front seat inserts are leather. Toyota's new trucks don't offer real leather at all...they have what they call "softex" instead. I think pretty much everyone is heading in that direction.
