Isn't GPS street data all from the same source?

https://www.gps.gov/support/user/mapfix/devices-and-maps/
No, not even close.

The location positioning info is common, and some (but not all) of the map data originates from government sources. exact sources used for maps, curation of changes, updates and more all differ between map vendors.

However the big difference is the app itself. The '24's are essentially running the TomTom Android app (Uconnect 5 is really just an Android tablet with the Amazon integrations instead of the Google ones, complete with Alexa).

The performance and behaviour of the apps is a big differentiator. Apple Maps/Google Maps are tops for general nav, followed by the big GPS vendors (Garmin, TomTom, etc), followed distantly by the 'roll your own' experience car manufacturers inflicted on us for years.

Offroad specialty maps are a seperate issue as well. The 24 Rubicons (and possibly the Willys) have one of the big-name US trails apps integrated. Not sure which one, as I'm Canadian and therefore only paid attention to BRMB and Gaia (as they are the only ones with good maps east of Alberta)

Many areas I travel have NO cell service, how will car play support ?
You can pre-download pretty much anywhere with Google Maps. Just choose the section of the world you want and download away.
Whenever I go wheel in an area I won't know the way home, I just pre-download the areas.

I've been getting the emails requesting me to update my Uconnect GPS maps - now on sale for $99. I decided to go for it since it's been 2 years since I did an update and I do use the GPS. Well, it turns out the update is for 2022 so the update is already outdated. I cancelled out before confirming.

2022 Map Update for Uconnect® 4C NAV w/ 8.4" touch-screen (v1 ASO)
QTY 1
$ 99.00

Does the built-in pre-2024 Nav have details like traffic / construction / etc.? Yeah, I haven't played with it much since 1: the user interface is primitive and 2: its maps are incredibly outdated.

I think it's supposed to have traffic. Not sure if I've failed to enable it, or it's actually missing.

Doesn't seem to have construction (and the speed limits are utterly fictional, at least for the GTA where it's consistently wrong on speed limits). Of course that's for Canada, data may be better in the US.

It's got really good red light/speed camera data though.

My jeep has most all or that, but No Nav.. oh well guess Ill still take my Garmin GPS.. thanks
I keep a Bad Elf GPS device handy for those times when I want to use my iPhone for navigation, it supports any Location Services aware app. One day Apple will admit to their customers that their SIM card devices (iPhone/iPad) only provide A-GPS, which blows chunks. Not to mention lack of full US map, though iOS 17 will come with offline map capability, ala Google Maps.

Betchya $20 the brand new UConnect 5 has virtually the same outdated maps as my old 8.4 unit.

It's supposedly a TomTom navigation system.
Yeah, but when it comes to local data storage, many OEM navigation systems and platforms still share the same map source "files."
