Some things i observed and learned as a new JL 6-speed manual driver. Its no secret that the clutch on these JLs are considered to be more sensitive than anything we are used to. So hopefully this helps some of you on your path to greatness in mastering the clutch here. I certainly stumbled more than a few times for sure

1) I took about a couple months to stop stalling (~1 out of 10 times) in parking lots and red lights. Don’t let that discourage you. 1st gear in this JL wrangler is the most touchy thing ive ever driven. You’ll eventually get it. And don’t be afraid to apply some extra throttle to get going in 1st. Eventually you’ll find the balance point.

2) Adjust the seat distance to get the perfect clutch feel. This worked wonders for my clutch catch point feel. At the right seating distance, my leg flex was at just the right angle where I can control my clutch and feel the catch point dead on. By the way this depends person to person since muscular action and feel is totally subjective. Think of it as the right distance where your vision becomes clear when you read some book or your prescription drugs. Its amazing how adjusting my seat distance has given me better feel for the clutch

3) Do everything in slow motion. I was used to driving 6speed manuals on sports cars and made the dumb assumption that it was somehow transferable to driving my wrangler. Just remember you are a sloth and the world is moving at the speed of crawl. The prize is you’ll be rewarded with smooth shifts and cool points from your passengers.

4) Don’t lug your engine with high gear+low rpm. In general try to keep your rpm around 2k. (disclaimer I have the base sport with 3.45 ratio). Remember that lugging your engine can be more damaging in the long run. In the expressway its tempting to keep low rpm to save gas. While this is fine when flat terrain constant cruising, its bad when you need to overtake/accelerate or going uphill. Keep the engine in the happy zone. You can feel and hear it. In general if im accelerating, i (DOWNSHIFT!) keep the rpm at or above 2k. Especially in the expressway going 60mph

5) Be willing to adapt. New transmission, new clutch, and new dynamics from a new car is normal. Don’t be stuck on the way your previous car behaved. Rather, learn and adjust to the new way the wrangler behaves, and it will leave you feeling accomplished. Kind of like you’ve tamed a beast. And that’s a feeling like no other. I imagine that's how cowboys felt riding their new horses they've tamed in the wild.

Hope this helped some folks out there questioning their choices in life when it comes to the JL 6-speed

Extra Credit: Get rid of that chunky factory shifter knob and get a Speed Dawg 8-ball knob. Its the perfect size (It'll make the shifter a bit taller but I found it to be totally worth it)

I agree the clutch is touchy, it took me a little time to get good with it. I’ve owned many manual transmission vehicles. One thing I do when I can is drive bare footed, I find I have much better “feel”.
i have not had the second recall done, just the first which was a re-flash. I’m debating if I want them to molest my Jeep for a clutch that may be little or no different than the one that’s in it now. I’m easy on my stuff, no lugging, that’s what that great drivetrain and transfer case are for. It may be better to hold out and get an aftermarket clutch, just thinking out loud.

@MauiSteve If your clutch feel like home to your feet, and nothings broke, then leave it be till the aftermarket upgrade. I agree with that

I’ve had mine a few months and I agree. I’ve had a Class A CDL since 2009. I just bought some OMP driving shoes for long trips and fun drives as that will help a lot.

Excellent write-up.

However - and let’s be frank - the core problem here is our OEM (diff pinion) gear ratio. Stellantis built it to lug down at 3.45, probably to “game” the CAFE standards. You’re managing the symptom brilliantly. But the cure for this disease is a regear. Get up into the mid-4’s and (assuming you keep things light and don’t make the wheels bigger), the JL thinks it’s a Big Wheel Miata.

I haven’t driven a manual sport, but the 4.10’s in the Rubi with stock 33’s isn’t horrible, not great either. When I go 35’s I’m also regearing and going 4.88 or 5.13’s.

Honestly still hesitant to touch something that aint broke. Maybe after the warranty runs out. I plan to keep this baby long term and maybe even till the wheels fall off :0

Mine was pretty damn bad with 33s and 4.10 gears (the numerically largest available gears at the time). I can't fathom how it'd be with 3.45 gears, especially with the 3.6L.

That's a good summary. Given all, I wouldn't trade my 6MT for an automatic.

edit: I'll add that re-gearing my inadequate 3.45 to 4.88 after lift and bigger tires made all the difference in the world.

Great write-up! Especially agree on the seat adjustment and "slow motion" parts. It makes huge difference. I've been driving manuals for 40+ years and my 3.6 JLR with 33 and 4.10 felt like it's my first manual transmission!😁 But after a month or so of adjusting and occasional embarrassing stallings it's smooth as butter now.

Around town using only 1-4 gears not bad once you get use to it. In the expressway 5th gear at 60+ and 6th gear at 75+ which means almost never

Thanks glad to see and hear of others who went thru the same trials and tribulations that is the JL manual  Youre absolutely right I drove manuals for 20yrs and this wrangler stopped me on my tracks. Felt like a worthy challenge and absolutely love driving this thing

Engagement of the clutch is near the top. Everyone else the same?
