so, i had to back all the way up my driveway this weekend with a pretty heavy load. it's got a slight incline and we normally park front in and just let it roll back in neutral to exit .....@8flat, you are absolutely right! no grunt at idle in reverse and it stalled.. with any gas you go waaaaay too fast unless you slip the clutch. not a fan of that at all.
HAHAHA finally someone that doesn't think I'm crazy! If there was a way to buy a different reverse gear set I'd literally pull the tranny and swap it. The ratio should be at least 30% lower, I'd say?

The other situation that this reverse gear sucks is when stuck in snow. 3.6 doesn't have enough torque to spin all 4 tires in reverse without raping the clutch, and 4LO in the rubicons is tooo low for this situation (not enough wheel speed, which is important in deep snow)

I got stuck in a snowbank this spring, had troubles.

It's mostly useless because it revs up but the Jeep doesn't really go anywhere.
The life of 4.10 axles there. My Old Dodge Dakota had 3.92 axles and I could start out in 2nd gear on a flat road.

My $.02-

I have a manual 2-door JLR on 35s and I HATE 1st gear. I hated it when I had the stock 33s. It's mostly useless because it revs up but the Jeep doesn't really go anywhere. Note I am coming from a 300HP VW GTI which was a ROCKET but still my JL feels so slow. I knew I was getting a slower vehicle but I don't know if I will ever be used to it. Those that say the JLs have pep have maybe never driven a peppy vehicle.

6th gear is mostly useless as well. If I am already at speed (65+) then I use 6th to save fuel. Otherwise if I ever need to go faster or if I hit a hill, I have to go back to 4th (and sometimes 3rd). In 6th, there is NO passing\accelerating power. This was also the case when I had 33s.

I've had my JL for about 4500 miles and I consistently get 20-MPG combined. I think this is only because I use 5th and 6th whenever I can to save on fuel, plus I don't drive like an asshole. I know my Jeep isn't a sports car so I don't try to drive it like one. ;)
Yep, same here, we're getting 20-21 MPG on highway trips unless we have a nasty headwind then it's 19. Driving 72-76mph typically. Pretty impressive, actually.

Same here on acceleration, it's a dud unless you run it up to readlline and shift fast. Then it's not too bad, I guess.

We need superchargers, that's the answer!

1st gear comes in handy when...cough, cough...you're off road and 6th gear on flat surfaces with the wind at your back!

it isnt the reverse gear thats the problem... the wrangler is actually (again) geared lower than my fj40.
its the gutless (at idle) 3.6 car motor.... just gotta give it too much gas. if it had the grunt to just idle along, it would be perfect.

I'd prefer a bigger engine, but yeah I would be quite happy with a turbo on this v6.[/QUOTE
Agreed. I tend to think for this application a supercharger might be better since they make more torque down low in the RPM band and don't have lag. But they're also less efficient (typically) than turbos and don't make as much power. Either option would make this 3.6 a fun engine though, a modest 100hp boost would be a kick.

Crazy, so this tranny's reverse gear is literally a lower ratio than your FJ40? Good grief.

I just need a hemi swap....crumple zone be damned, haha

yup... fj40 4.27:1... wrangler 4.49:1
fj40 has 3.70s and the rubicon has 4.10s and the 2F has no problem idling up my driveway in either direction at about 2mph... a slow walk. jeep needs to slip the clutch in reverse with any kind of load in it. kinda silly

Reverse is such a joke... Every time I park I almost would rather get lined up and then get out and push it into the spot. Much less effort that way.

hahahahahaha

prob is, FCA doesnt make a truck engine. all their engines are just re-purposed car engines.
the hemis are just such torque monsters that it doesnt matter but the v6 is just weak for truck purposes.
so, unless you want a diesel, which i wont get because the new emissions regs are a nightmare, youre stuck with what you got unless you wanna put a supercharger on it. the hemi transplant is like $30k. no thank you

30K yikes. I've done engine swaps so I tend to think I could get a hemi swap done myself much cheaper, but I know it's not an easy swap to pull off. I haven't looked into the details much.

I'm trying to think back to all the supercharged rigs I've driven (only a handful), I don't think they will make boost at idle unless they're significantly over-driven? So in reality I'm not sure if they'd help this low-speed no-torque issue much? It'd sure help everywhere else though....getting stuck, passing cars, overall fun factor, etc.

it is the electrics which is the killer. cant just shoehorn a small block in, hook up the fuel and the battery and call it good.
these things are electrical nightmares
