I'm in dire need of a good set of jack stands. What is your preference?
Is it safe to buy them at Harbor Freight?

I use US Jack 6 ton stands. Only ones made in the USA, and the wide width fits Jeep frame rails: https://www.usjack.com/products/garage-jack-stands

They also aced the Project Farm tests, but I had purchased them years prior:

They were only $150 when I bought them though, they're like $275 now and that is fairly pricey...

For me, I’ve grown to like the ones that have a pin as a safety in addition the the slotted/seesaw mechanism.

haven’t paid too much attention to brand and tried to go with way more weight than I’ll ever put on (current ones are 3ton IIRC).

Yeah, I have a backup pair of forklift jack stands with pins, 13 tons: https://esco.net/product/esco-forklift-style-jack-stands/

I put them under the Jeep somewhere else as a backup.

I would avoid Harbor Freight.
A tale of caution: a friend of mine found his older brother crushed under his Chevelle in their garage. I remember this when I work on cars…..spend a few more dollars and minutes an be safe!

From the testing video, Big Red seemed to be a good mix of quality and a reasonable price. I've got a pair of 6-tons sitting in my Amazon "wish list"

The best jack stands I've ever used are the pin type. I've been using jack stands at home and professionally long enough not to ever fully trust those type with the ratchet lever locking type.

If I'm under a vehicle with wheels off, there's a jack and jack stand holding my vehicles up. Sometimes I'll even toss a wheel underneath as backup so a vehicle can't fall all the way

Even the best brand jack stands out there can be dangerous if you aren't paying attention. The lock can be partially seated and cause a failure. Always check and test it.

You'll never have or even hear of a pin type jack stand failure. Well, unless its overloaded a lot. Doubtfully that a pin type would fail even overloaded just a bit. I have some cheapo pin type sold in the 70's by Kmart that have smaller pins. The rating is worn away, but I'll trust them more than these newer ratchet locking type.

Been using this set for two years and very happy no complaints. I also like the HF Daytona 3 ton Jack.

I've been using the powerbuilt jack stands with hydraulic jack built in.

I wouldn't be scared of Harbor freights jack stands at all, especially the new Daytona's.They have the safety pin and the push in safety tab, IMO they're gonna be as good as anything else that is in the same $ range. I don't see the need to spend more.

I'm not sure if you've seen any in person, but they actually are very well put together.

One member mentioned a friend being crushed using them. First I'm very sorry for the loss, but I would have to wonder if it wasn't an user error ? With any jack, placement is critical. This is the only time I've ever heard of a tragedy using harbor freight jacks.
I'm not sure when it happened, but I wonder if they were possibly an older model.

I just picked these up on sale for $27.99.

I bought two of these from Tractor Supply. I like the concept since it knocks out a step in the lift & support process. Unfortunately, one started leaking hydraulic fluid after a few uses. The other is fine.

Good comparison video, but to me the testing was somewhat inaccurate. Atleast for me, I would never have the stands so close together on the axle, willing to bet, if he would have spread them out as close to the tires as possible he wouldn't have tipped the vehicle anywhere near the force he used.

I also found it funny that he was using a HF jack, so obviously he has no problem with HF products.

Great comparison though.

Cliffs Notes: I returned 1 set of HF Daytona 3-Ton jack stands and purchased 2 sets of HF Daytona 6-Ton Jack Stands.
**************************
Hey bud , I wanted to THANK YOU !... you got my gears turning.

I had just purchased a set of HF 3-Ton Daytona jack stands for the member sale price of $27.99 , which is the lowest price I think they ever get sold for.

* as a side note, I have used a Craftsman 3-Ton jack and a set of their 3-Ton jack stands for over 35 years. I still use the stands, but my jack needs rebuilt, it gave out last year.

This is when I bought a HF Daytona 3-Ton jack. I have been really happy with the quality, so I decided to buy the 3-Ton stands to match and make a nice set.

BACK TO IT

As I said, you got my gears turning. Not long after posting, checking my email, I had one
from HF advising a sale and members had early access. Lowe and behold, jack stands were back on sale. Both 3 and 6 Ton versions.

Well after some thought, it was an easy decision to figure my safety and life were worth an extra $60 bucks or so...

I bought 2 sets of the Daytona 6-Ton for $57.99 each... which I believe once again is the lowest price they get sold for.

So I'm very happy with the upgrade !
