I have a question for those of you who have changed your oil yourself.

I just had my first oil change done at the dealer. In the manual it says to check oil 5 minutes after turning jeep off.

So I did that at the dealer after I got out to the jeep and the level looked right. After sitting over night the level is up to the cable part of the dipstick.

Is this the wrong way to check oil by waiting over night?

Can someone who has filled up with exactly 5qts. Let me know what yours reads after sitting over night?

Thanks

Oil should be at the top of the hash marks, should not be on cable.

There's a constant problem of dealers putting 6qt (what the JK needed) instead of 5qt (what the JL needs). I think the solution is to buy a 5qt jug of your oil of choice and make the dealer use that lol.

In my experience with Chrysler dealers in the past, when I DID that they would ignore my request about half the time lol.

Exactly 5 qts in on recent oil change. After 10 minutes it was halfway in hash marks, after 45 minutes it was perfectly at the top.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
Waiting overnight will assure that you get a 100% accurate measurement, so nothing wrong in doing so. The only think you did that was wrong was letting the dealer perform this incredibly idiot-proof procedure. Doing the oil yourself is so simple only the dealer can mess it up!

Thanks for all replies. After reading the owner's manual I was second guessing myself. I will do all my oil changes from now on.

Like many others I figured if I mentioned it before the oil change they would do it right.

Man, if I were to go by this forum, I lucked out and have one of very few competent dealerships in the entire country.

Go by the book. When I do it myself and put exactly 5 quarts in there, then run it to full operating temp, then shut down, wait 5 minutes, then check, it is exactly at the top of the hashmarks which is where it should be.

As others have said, when you do it yourself, you'll know 100% for sure you put 5 quarts in there.

It is so very sad when we do not trust the dealers even when it comes to such a simple task as is an oil change .

Oil changes at dealers are not usually done by experienced mechanics. They are done by high school kids making minimum wage. They are also expected to do 4-5 changes an hour. They don't know any better and don't have time think anyway.

Did my 1st oil change today on my 2020 JLRU. I have had it for 17 days and it has 1004 miles on it.

So easy! I let it drain for about 2 hours while I did some other projects. No 10 minute oil change for me. I want as much of the factory oil out as possible. I will do my next change in 4000 miles... when the odometer reads 5000 miles, then every 5k after.

Amsoil 5w-30 SAE and a Mopar filter.
