The dealers just didn't want it. I looked at getting another vehicle because of the recall and I would have been able to trade it. I'm glad I didn't go through with it because now that the recall has been done, I feel better about my jeep.

Did you get trade offers? As soon as the dealers pulled up my VIN with the recall and "parts unavailable" it ended any discussion with polite NOPEs or suggestions to get the recall completed and then bring it back.

any chance you might be confusing Recalls?

there was a Y81 Campaign which was absolutely necessary to address Emissions issues before registration was possible.
the Z96 HPFP recall notice says "The State of California requires the completion of emission recall repairs prior to vehicle registration renewal", but i don't see anything definitive that states Z96 is an Emissions-related issue; instead it is repeatedly referred to as a "Safety Recall".

the part i found most interesting is hidden in the footnotes (as seems to be typical):
"If your dealer fails or is unable to remedy this defect without charge and within a reasonable time, [emphasis added] you may submit a written complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Ave., S.E., Washington, DC 20590, or you can call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov."
i'd be curious what anyone who follows-through on that step learns.

i'd still be more interested in learning what *exactly* is different about these allegedly updated pumps we're supposed to be getting.

[EDIT:

@wingdog
i got my sticker in Nov without any fuss.]

I’m located in Sacramento area and been trying to get the HPFP recall taken care of. I have not had any issues and really don’t expect to, but need to get this taken care of because the Jeep recall letter states that DMV will not renew my registration without it being done. Mine is due in June so I’m trying to be proactive on this knowing there are waiting lists.

I put my name on a list at the closest dealer to me earlier this month but I had to explain to them that people were having these replaced when they told me that parts weren’t available yet. Just called to check status and they told me that not all parts are available. I had them confirm to me that they had not replaced ANY pumps yet.

Just called a second dealer, who is more well known for supporting jeeps, and asked to be in the list. They took my VIN and looked it up. Said all parts were on back order and didn’t know how long it would be but put me on the list. I asked how long was the list and she said it was relatively short compared to many of their other recall lists. I am number 73 and other lists are over 300+.

Things are not looking good. I’m going to contact several others in the area. May need to pressure some contacts I know at state agencies about problems beyond the consumers control which are impacting their ability to comply with state registration policies.

UPDATE: just talked with another dealer well known in the Rubicon trail area and I’m now number 34 on that list. He said that he has done 4 so far and it’s all about parts availability. At least I finally talked with someone who 1) knows the situation and 2) has actually swapped some out. He did say that he’s heard that the state is aware that lack of parts is causing issues with people being able to do this in time for registration renewal.

it doesn't seem to be the pump people are typically waiting for, but some of the other parts that get replaced as part of the recall.

Here’s what I don’t understand about how the UAW strike impacted this. It’s not a Jeep manufactured fuel pump. Why would the strike in the US impact a fuel pump manufactured elsewhere?

Thanks for the info! I have not done either recalls and my smog guy even put a note on the result saying Y81 is not completed but he said it's not mandatory.

Mine came in, supposed to be there Monday. They cancelled the appointment on me and said my part was “damaged” aka they gave it to a friend probably.

I was told by another person who had to renew his registration late December that DMV wouldn’t send him the new registration until he had the recall done and the paperwork from the dealer showing that.

are we sure this other person wasn't confusing the Z96 recall with the Y81 Emissions recall?

We were directly discussing the HPFP recall. Not the previous emissions one.

OK, that's weird.

some people seem to have problems re-registering and some haven't; i wonder if it's just got to do with the consistency we see from our lovely DMV.

was this guy eventually able to get his recall done and the vehicle registered? if so, do you know what was required to make that happen?

It was on a FB Jeep Ecodiesel group and I haven’t seen anything new from him. I think he said he was still pretty far down the list. Who knows with the DMV. Worse case, I plan to pay the renewal when the time comes regardless of whether mine is done or not and let it ride. If they want to stop and give me a ticket, I’ll argue it in traffic court and show my attempts on getting it done.

I submitted a formal complaint to NHTSA on October 6, 2023, before any solution was declared by Jeep. Called last week to check on it. Still live/reviewing. Several other complaints logged in the NHTSA database for same recall without a fix or Jeep/Stellantis refusing to complete the recall.
