I mounted one inside the jeep on the rear sport bar. I tapped the back of the seatbelt and bolted it there. Works well for trail comms. It gives up some range for a ham radio if your looking for distance, but for GMRS and just trail comms in a group, it is great.

I used a NMO mount

What bracket is that? Link(s) would be appreciated.

That is just the base that came with the antenna.

I bent up some metal to make it the angle that I want.

It isnt installed there anymore. My radio is a HAM with a MARS mod that allows me to use ham and GMRS frequencies on one radio. That location worked well for trail comms but I wanted a taller antenna for the HAM.

Here is the thread for the radio install with the final antenna location.

Here is a picture of the NMO mount on my hood. The antenna there was for a trunking scanner. I rerouted the coax in the cabin to my GMRS radio. I currently have the Midland antenna there.

How is that location working out? How well will that work with the plastic hard top on? I was thinking of doing similar center mounted on rear roll bar.

Yes, the all-in-one-kit with the Midland 275 has our rear bracket. Now that our front-mount bracket is available, I'll try to modify our web page to make the front mount an option in the kit. Until then, just email me.

The front-mount has a couple of advantages. First, it is super-easy to install. Those looking for a mount that is easy and where routing the coax can be done quickly, the front mount is a good choice. Perhaps also for those that want to continue to have their CB antenna at the back of the Jeep.

Because the front mount can use the aluminum hood as a ground-plane, I would expect that the performance of the front mount is also going to be better than the rear mount.

Suffolklou - I like what you did and it's great for a stealth mount. Trail performance with your group should be no problem at all.
I am interested in one of these kits with front mount.
Do you offer a discount price.

Hi, this forum is the only place we advertise and I suppose our only exposure beside word of mouth, We are often asked about "forum prices" - but all of our prices are forum prices... this is our audience!

Here is my GMRS/HAM setup! Not very happy with it because the LMR400 ultra flex cable is going to probably brake, eventually every time i open and close the tailgate :/ but it works for now!

Best install yet. did you use a grounding braid ?
I haven't yet. I have one for my CB antenna, but so far haven't really had any interference or issues with the GMRS radio that's made me eager to get one.

Does anyone make a mount that goes on the hood latch ?? That seems like an obvious place to put it but no one seems to be making one.
I think the consensus is that the more you can keep a front mount out of your line of sight, the better (aesthetically). Smack in the middle of the hood would be the best for performance (somewhat symmetrical ground plane.) Our front cowl mount lets you choose 1 of 4 places - 2 on each side and none of them will touch/harm the paint if you decide to remove or move it down the road.

Did you think about doing the MARS mod to your HAM so it can transmit on GMRS also?
