Ok, so you ordered the cap and strap (Amazon), but only used the new strap on the OEM cap. I’ll try it, so the new strap from the link provided is a few inches longer?
If yours is the 5" one then yeah its longer. They are easy to swap around too. The original I had was too short when I changed to the fuel door.

Yup, that’s my dilemma. I installed the mopar fuel door and now the strap is too short. It’s useable but a PIA.

Then you will definitely be happier with this.I think it could have still been a bit longer but its much more manageable. I think if the door swung out to the left a few more degrees it would make a huge difference also.

Maybe I am missing something, but I have to ask. Once removed, does the dangling gas cap get in the way of the pump handle/nozzle when pumping gas? Every time I fill up I have to make the pump handle/nozzle fit in and around the darn gas cap which seems to be in the way. I should probably just get a longer cord for the cap, but maybe I am missing something.
I thought this was normal, thx for bringing it up!

Thx everyone. I have a Willys which came with no fuel door. I put the mopar door on. So I guess the jeeps with no door have a shorter tether than jeeps with a fuel door. So I just need to now buy a longer tether since I have the fuel door. Thx for all the comments as it solved my issue. Much appreciated.
Nope.
My Rubicon came with a fuel door, and the cord is as stupid short, as yours in the pic you provided.

The OEM design is not good. Its the only vehicle I have where I actually have to put thought into what to do with it while pumping gas to 1) keep it out of the way and 2) keep from scraping the paint.
I've use a couple different make shift tether holders that ultimately got in the way of the pump handle. Now I have a makeshift cap holder along the back of the fuel door thats been holding up surprisingly well......till I find a smarter design.
I like the idea of removing the tether altogether....but I would likely lose that sh't.

since when don't they? ;)

my Willys came with one. (all the Diesels do,...)
and i just hang the cap on the tether over the door when filling. (note this is with the Mopar locking Diesel cap, but i did the same thing with the original cap.)

Since when do Jeeps have fuel doors?

No problem on my open filler, as god intended.

Having bought and built the Mopar locking gas cap to use my key, I guess I didn't remember this dilemma.

Hard to forget the cap anywhere when it's attached to my key

Having recently installed a fuel door, I encountered the problem of the short tether yesterday when I went to fill up the Jeep. I'm going to try a DIY solution and see if that works.

1.) I removed the stock 5" tether and cut it in half.
2.) I removed the outer sheathing from a bicycle brake cable. The way I did it was to peel back a small portion of the outer sheathing to expose the inner metal core that protects the brake cable itself. Put the metal inner core in a bench vice and since it is wound inside like a spring, you can then unscrew the outer sheathing from it. I figure the sheathing is flexible and should be fairly weather resistant.
3.) I then put some Gorilla Glue in both ends of the sheathing and slid the two halves of the stock tether into them.

We'll see how well the glue holds up. If it doesn't work, I may try using some shrink-wrap to add some length in the middle and drill a new hole lower down in the fuel door.
