Look, tampering of any kind is exceeding rare. But please don't make it sound like plastic water bottles are anything but ubiquitous.

You're thinking a regular plastic bottle will work? No, it has to be designed to open the spring-loaded flap, which only opens when a correctly-sized nozzle (~.87 inches for gas, ~.93 inches for our diesels) is inserted.

Side note: somehow you can't put a gas nozzle in a diesel. I intentionally tried it once and it wouldn't go in. That is, if you really want to be further protected from Dastardly Scoundrel you should get a diesel.

A locking gas cap does require more effort to do something nefarious. If a bunch of miscreants are out trying to add something to your tank they will move on to an easier target.

They had to prepare beforehand by getting a fuel additive to make it past the guards that are in place. If they did that it's not much more work to pick up a screwdriver to pop open the fuel door, right?

That is interesting because I have added Lucas, Techron and a few others to my gas and they push that flap right open. I'm surprised the gas nozzle wouldn't push the diesel open.

I'm thinking there's something about the flap that it won't open unless it's the object is the right size. No clue how that works.

The nozzle on an additive would obviously need to be "the right size".
