Since I have two free tire rotations within the Wave program for my new Willys, and generally too lazy myself, I took it to the dealer. Here is what I got on the invoice:

Concern CUSTOMER STATES PERFORM TIRE ROTATION. 5 tire rotation please
document rotation pattern for customer
Correction PERFORMED TIRE ROTATION.
Spare - Passenger rear
Passenger Rear - Driver front
Driver front - Driver rear
Driver rear - Passenger front
Passenger front- Spare

This looks very novel to me. I always thought that rears go to the same side fronts, while fronts cross to the rear.

The spare should be rotated in. The pattern that is used should be the same from now on. There are different variations but they all do the same. If you don't rotate the spare you will end up with an old "new" tire. I rotate every 5K miles with my oil change.

I wanted them to rotate the spare. It is just that I expected the fronts to cross while moving to the rear, not the rears crossing when moving to the front.

I printed the picture of what Twisted posted years ago., I give it to the Tech every tire rotation, they follow this every time. Been doing this forever for all my Wranglers. Print it, have it followed..

How often should Mickey Thompson tires be rotated?
At least every 3000-5000 miles. Note: It is also suggested that you have the tires balance checked at this time as well, even if you just static balance them.
What is the best rotation pattern?
Cross non-drive tires to drive axle. Move drive axle tires straight to non-drive axle.
Note: On a 4×4 vehicle consider the rear axle the drive axle.

That works, as do several other cross patterns. Now, VERY IMPORTANT, since you do not do your own rotations, get a piece of chalk and before the rotation, note the position you want the tire to be in when you come back to get it. In your example the spare would be marked RR, etc.

If you take this to most dealers, I can almost guarantee that the tires will not be in the right position when you come back. Just do the walk around and tell them to do it again. The service writer gets it. The guy doing the work does not.

If I were the OP I would re-do it to the proper way. ie drive tires straight ahead.....that is the proper way on a straight axle 4wd vehicle. that way it is easier to keep track of...I am a beat down old drunk and I have done every rotation on my vehicles since the 70's. I would not trust someone else to do it. too many stories of cross threaded lugs....

The whole idea is to get even wear. So, no specific pattern of rotation is gospel. For example: my fronts wear slightly faster than rears. I try to get the spare onto the front and the fronts onto the rear or spare position. Some Jeep owners might have much faster wear in the rear, because they have a 392 or diesel and they have a leadfoot. So, their priorities for rotation would be different. If they all wear about the same on your rig, you can do a simple clockwise or counterclockwise rotation to keep it simple. In the end, all that matters is they wear-out about the same time. Don't sweat the small stuff.
